Ar the horse races which took place place on the Hillsborough ice Saturday afternoon, Mr. Henry Hooper’s “Joe Murphy,” took first place, Mr. B. C. Prowse’s “Barney C,” second and Mr. L. J. Sentner’s third. PETER GiLLis, of Selkirk Road, Lot 60, died of pneumonia, on the 20th day of January, 1899, at the age- of 44 years. He was considered one .of the strongest men in the county and never known to be sick until this pneumonia laid him aside which proved fatal in a few days. Mr. Gillis was a kind heart- ed man, a good and obliging neighbor, anyone who required h‘s assistance. His brothers and sisters have the -deep- est sympathy of the immediate neigh- bors and friends everywhere.-Com- Tiii: entire dry goods stock of Mr. W. D. McKay, valued at about $26.- 000, has been purchased 'oy Messrs. Prowse Bros. who have also leased the building now occupied by Mr. McKay. will be open for business ` to- day. Rev Dr. Wiiliams is here in the inter- ests of St. James’ church, Montreal, which is in financial difficulties caused by the congregation of the older Sr. James’ church, in furthering Metho- dism in that city by branching out into two other churches and in building a new St.James’,incurred the debt to such an extremely burdensome amount that it was found necessary to appeal to the Isistauce.
