A had automobile, accident occurred about 2.40 o’ciock yesterday morning, ns -the result of"which Samuel Craig and Daniel 0'Br-len are in the P. E. island Hospital for severe injuries received and Mr. 0'Brien{s car is wrecked almost beyond repair. Both were proceeding along Prince St. at considerable speed when their ear suddenly swerved over the curb and on to the side of the lawn sdjacsnt to the" residence of Mr. James Paton. The car struck a large tree between the curb and the sidewalk with such force that it was thrown completely on end and the occupants were thrown out with terrific violence. A -telephone call from a. house near by brought Dr. Yeo to the scene. When he arrived he found both men covered with blood. Craig was un- conscious. Polleemen William Mc- Innis and James Bradley arrived shortly afterwards. When they got there Craig was lying unconscious, but 0’Brlen was able to move around. The whole front of the car was badly smashed. The oillcers assisted Dr. Yeo in getting the injured men into an automobile which rushed them to the hospital. Both suffered jaw in- juries and Craig has fractured bones in his hands and arms, besides severe scalp wounds and various con- tusions. 0’Brien, besides s fractur- ed jaw had several ribs broken, and also had scalp wounds. It was necessary to have six stitches put in the side of his mouth. Mr. O’Brien claim; that the steering gear of his car had been working 'badly for some time. He had -taken it to a garage for repairs, but »i‘t still' worked un- satisfactory. That both men escaped with their lives seems wonderful in view of all the circumstances. The impact of the ear striking the tres tore the front of the car in as far as the engine. The strong fender crumbled like load until the tres reached the front axle carrying it back slso. lt tore away the radiator and fenders and twisted the side mem bers oi the frame badly. So great must have been the impact, that the back of the drlver’s seat was bent ini out 6f shape about five or six inches. This must have been caused either from the msn in the rear seat strik- ing it or being thrown forward or it may have been due to the twisting of the body of the-car. The windshield was smashed to atoms, and the oc- cupants ot the car cut by the broken glass. The driver did not leave the car, but evidently was -pinned against the steering wheel, which was cover- ed with blood. The, steering rods un- derneath the car were badly bent, due possibly to the car striking the first curb. in this way the driver, with the car going st a high rate of speed, would find it almost impossible to control. The continuous blowing of the horn after the car was wrecked caused quite a noise and was due to short elreuiting when the connections were broken, ‘ The two injured msn st latest sc~ counts were reported doing well in the _ _ M0Si »lliip0ri§;nt _ Mztter_ Selected From ‘This Week’s News for _The.
