tt ATLY MXAMINER, NOV# Pernt: Saree SRM MBER 19. 1885. —=——— eee — —— _ The Hidden Sweetness. ee BY MARY BRADLEY. We need no special grace to sec The sweetress that around as lice In homes where happy children be, {n birds and brooks and summer skies ; Even where sorrow folds Ler wings In dumb persistence by our hearth, Still we can fee! what blessed things Make beautiful the earth, And thrill responsive to the sease Of every lovely influence, But ah! how faintly we are stirred By things divine, whose voices seem As ineffectually heard As Voices in adream ! We praise thee with our lips, and yet The while we cry, ‘‘How sweet Thou art !” It is as though a seal were set Upon our eyes and heart. The sweetness that we might possess We see not, and we fee! still less. Lord, unto whom our dull desires Are known, and every hindering sin, Kindle anew the fervent tires Phat ought to glow our souls within ; The sorrowful days are here again When Thou wert in the lonesome wild, In prayer, in fasting, and in pain For us unreconciled, Give to us now, O Christ, to see How wholly eweet Thy love can be. Debating for Boots. There is a tradition in the loeal shoe trade which connects Edward Austin of Chicago, as a bootand shoe salesman with Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas. While those famous men were travelling in company, stumping Illi- nois, they were fellow-passengers on a stage coach with Austiv. Ascertaining that he sold boots, that he had no politi- eal bias, and that he would remain over night inthe town where both were to engage in joint debste, Lincoln propos. ed to Dougias that Austin should act as referee, and, after having heard both speeches, give a pair of boots to the one whose address best pleased him,add- ing: “If he awards the boots to you, Douglas, I'll pay for them, but if he hands them to me, you foot the bill,”’ Douglas was agreesble, and that night Edward Austin was the preferred audi- tor in the throng of 3,000 people. The Rail-splitter and the Little Giavt (so Austin says) “talked squarely at me.” When the meeting adjourned Austin hurried to Douvlas’ room. “Senator,” he said, “I regret to announce that I have just fitted a pair of boots on Mr. Lincoln.” “So you liked Abe’s speech better than mine? Ail right, sir, what is the bill ?” “Ten dollars.” “Thore is yoo money.” Five minutes later the irrepressib'e Austin, rapped act Lincoln’s door, and upon entering announced with regret that he had awarded the boots to Sena- tor Dangias, “Very well, youag man; sorry yon preferred the Senator ; how much do I owe you ?” “Only ten dollars, Mr. Lincolp,” The next morning, when the great orators were paying their hotel bills, the landlord handed each a new pair of boots. “Why Lincoln,” said Douglas “I thought our friend gave you the boots! I paid him ten dollars tor them last night !” Lincoln, roaring with laughter,assur- ed Douglass that he, too, had given the referee ten dollars under the impression that the boots had been won by the Senator. Of course both were-anxious to see their umprejudiced young friend and umpire, the boot man, but, of course, they never did. Austin had left the hotel before breakfast.—Shoe and Leather Review. A Good Word. Police Magistrate Bartlett, of Wind- sor, Ont., opened hiseyes in ‘astonish- ment when four Frenchmen were ar- raigned before him last week. “It is seldom I have'a Frenchman before me,” he said, later in the day. “They. give me less trouble than any other class, numerous as they are here, and it is hardly ever that one is sent up for drankness;1I don’t believe that you ean find five on my docket in a year.” The offenders were Southern Railway employes, and had been appropriating railway property to their own uses. —_~___—_~<.em-e—- — — NOTES.
