Charges against Gov- ernor Schultz. Orrawa, Sept. 5. The House of Commons spent yesterday in committee of supply. The charges against Cochrane, M. pa have practically fizzled. Numerous wit- nesses called by the grits have exculpated him, and the only one who incriminated him was drunk when giving evidence, The committee afterwards proceeded to investigate the charges against Governor Schultz of Manitoba. A week ago, when Schultz arrived, the grits would not ex- amine him, insisting upon the attendance and eXamination of other witnesses first. (hese parties were procured and attended yesterday, when the grits refused to ex- amine them, insisting upon having Schultz examined tirst. The committee decided to examine the parties who made the charges. James Stewart, the prin- cipal accuser, made a_ terrible mess of his testimony, contradicting himself. He admitted that he never would have made the charges had not he been sent for todo so. The Grits’ objection to examine him was easily understood after his exami- nation commenced. The Grits wanted to adjourn the investigation, but the Govern- ment insisted on going on, when the Grits became abusive and commenced abusing Governor Schu!tz Altogether, yesterday was a bad day for the grits, and the probabilities are that the temperature will be much colder for them within the next fostnight, The sub-committee selected to prepare and report on the Tarte- Mctireevy case, met yesterday and adjourned till Tuesday without doing anything. Amyot, in his speech on Thursday, com- mitted the whole grit party to the support of Mercier. The Quebec grits increase in their demands that Ontario shall support them or they will sever their connections at once. There will be civic holiday here on Monday. No papers will be issued, THE POPES HEALTH. Contradiction. ee ee An Ofiicial Rome, Sept. 5. The announcement of the Pope’s illness has been officially contradicted.
