The next school is expected right away and there will, no doubt, be good fishing for the next fortnight as they are still doing well on the Nova Scotia shore. Mr. George Heisler, captain of the fishing schooner Erskine B, is pre- paring to leave for Sourls to engage in cod-fishing during the summer months. The Lewis brothers are also preparing to leave for Tignlsh where they will follow the same calling. This is as good a place as any to make a few remarks on these two very significant facts. ‘The codfish are very numerous off Alberton Har- bour. So numerous, indeed, that it is a simple matter to load the boats every day. Yet no one is fishing, for there is no market here and. at no time in the cod industry were prices’ as high as they are at present. Ver- ily, something is wrong with a place when two such complete fishing out- fits as those owned by the above mentioned fishermen, have to leave their own port and fish in other places. There is a Board of Trade in A1- berton and since it evidently has not - sufficient energy nor initiative to ~ function, the writer will help it along by telling it not only what to do to remedy this condition but also how to do it. All of which is quite simple. if the Secretary of our Board of Trude were to write the Gordon Pew Company, Gloucester, Mas" asking them to send a buyer to A-lberton and promising them five or six boats, we would have a buyer here in no time. This company has buyers in Rus- tico, Tignish, and Miminlgash. Why not Alberton? From all present indications, those who expect to buy salt cod this fall for five or six cents a pound, are go- ing to be sadly disappointed. Some - idea of the present scarcity of this fish on the world's markets may be got from the fact that the Gordon Pew Company have purchased two million pounds of cod from Iceland and a million and a hall’ pounds in < Alaska. Mr. Emerson Matthews and Mr.. Howard Clark are both buying fresh mackerel here-price two cents apiece. At this price, none of our fisher-Inn an contemplating spend- - lng the winter months on the Riv- iera. The fishermen with anchored nets report no mackerel. The Lewis Bros. who were drifting Tuesday night off New London, brought in fifty ntackercl Wednesday morning. It would appear from this that the mackerel have not reached off this harbour yet. What few are caught nre selling at 20 cents each. ltlr.
