April za-Jack Jonn- son, negro pugilist, was fined $1000 by Judge Carpenter in the United States D'strict Court today, after charges of smuggling a $2000 necklace had been dropped, and the heavy- weight had pleaded nolle contendere to charges of concealing from Fede- ral officials the fact that he had iew- elry in his possession. The necklace was forfeited to the Government, and probably will be sold at auctioh. The action winds up the lesser of two cases which Federal authorities have against Johnson. He is still to come to trial on an indictment charg ing violation of the Mann Act.; The necklace was .brought into this country when the pugilist’s first' white wife, who afterwards commit- ted suicide, returned from a Euro- pean tour. -»--_l_..__l_. The Empress and Northumberland will re- sume their regular runs on Monday. REMAINS FORWARDED.- The re- mains of Mr. Jeremiah Pineau, whose death was reported in yesterday’¢ Guardian, were conveyed to the rail- way station yesterday, en route to Rustico, where he will be buried this morning. The late Mr. Pineau was a young man of about 20 years of age and was respected and esteemed by all who knew him. He leaves to mourn his loss, a grief-stricken sister and many relatives and friends to whom. The Guardian extends sincere sympathy, WEDDING BELLS.-The marriage took place on Wednesday, April 9th, 1013, at Plymouth, of Mr. Nelson C. Anderson, of Guernsey, and Miss Ruth Anna Barnes, of Plymouth. Rev. H. R. Vessey, of Wutrous, performed the ceremony. The bride .was at- tended by her sister Lnrado H. Barnes while Mr. Weston Andersor acted as best man. E. I., be it there- fore resolved; that we the Officers and members of Strathcona Farmers Institute enter our protest against passing an act to allow them to run on our country roads, at least until such time as proper roads would be constructed whereon to operate them.” (Patriot and Examiner.) FLORAL SOCIETY.-A meeting of the Floral Association of Prince Ed- ward Islaud was held last night in the office of Mr. Williams, with the President, Mr. J. A. Clark, in the chair. After reading and confirming the minutes of the previous meeting, a constitution and code of bye-laws was adopted. The prize list was then. taken up and a few changes and add- itions made. It was decided to post- pone publication of these pending re- ceipt of further suggestions. Mr. W. S. Louson donated a silver medal to be given as first prize for the best collection of wild flowers to be ex- hibited at the Flower Show in Au- gust, open to all the children of the province. It was decided that com- petition at the Flower Show would be confined to members of the Asso- ciation with the exception of that in wild flowers which will he open to all children, also t-hat no entry fee woull be charged exhibitors. A fee of ten cents will be charged for general ad- mission to the Show. 'A committee was appointed to wait upon the Cum- missioncr of Agriculture with a view to securing financial assistance from the government. The selection of a building in which to hold the Flower Show was left in the hands of thc Executive Committee.
