Although Student Union‘ comptroller, Bill Chandler did his best in leading the“ spectators in support of the Panthers on Saturday after- noon last, the Acadia Axemen gave us very little opport- unity for real cheering as they dominated the play pre— tty well throughout the foot- ball game and smothered our heroes 41-1 in a contest in which the defense of both teams was stressed. We did stay in the game for the first half, retiring to the dressing rooms with’only a 1—12 deficit and scoring the only pointiaf~the Second : quartergfifidfiéve Effiiadia Was admittedly the'best team on the field and really took control of the game in the second half. Cliff MacLeod. I was their chief groundgainer with 152 yards in 42-tries. We are indebted to the statistical demons, John Ne— ville and Gordon MacAlpine who, besides all the figures they busily juggle during any game, were able to dis- close the Panther's unsung hero, Trainer Dave 'Hermie' MacNeil,covered/during this game no less than 1290 yards in 9 carries as he rushed on and off the field to render V assistance to injured and hurting players! That works out to 143.3 yards per att— empt! In View of our belief that this marks the first time that such a statistic has been compiled we feel no hesitation to, on Hermie's behalf, lay claim-to a new, Canadian Intercollegiate re— cord. Another first for UPEI and congratulations,Hermie. we feel it appropiate to add Phat, probably due to his Jogging activities, to which We refer below, Hermie, at the end of the game, trotted 9ff the field looking to be 1“ n0 distress andjfresh as a daisy in spite of his re— cord-making and action-filled afternoon. This coming Saturday the U.P.E.I.ifootball scene shi- MucNeffl fts tq Antigonish where we take on our traditional riv- al, St. Francis Xavier. If the previous contests betwo- en these two teams can be used as a measure, this sho- uld be a hard fought game. Kevin Newman is organizing a-bus trip for the Student Union...last trip indicati- ons were that a second bus trip would have suceeded, but reservations have to be made early and if student 3 do not rush down to the S.U. office with $7.00 in their ,/ hands and ask Jane to put them onher list by Wednesday at 5 p.m. they have no-one to blame but themselves. This time, the first 40 to lay‘ down their dough will go on Vera's bus... if anoth— er 40 want to go they'll have to find a less enter— taining driver. 1 If‘you are driving arcs und the roadway which for— ms the perimeter of the ca- mpus and see a skinny guy on the trot, who looks as though he might be Charlie Brown's son, take a second look, for it will be Charl- es Brown, M.D., himself! Charlie, by dint of hard work and_great determinatj ion has shed about 50 lbs., and seemingly, 15 years. He serves as a great m1- to those who are attempt- ing to follow his example. One gets increasingly sur- prised at the number of those who, obviously, are becoming aware of the exc— ess avoirdupois of their midsections and who are tr- ying to do something about it as they jog during the- ir spare time or walk to and from home to work. During weekends like the past homecoming one we are often surprised by the fr— equent number of dignified gentlemen approaching obee sity who greet us and wh— om we recognize, yardily, as the skinny athletes of less than a decade past. So far we haVe resisted the temptation to join the jo— ggers but we urge others to consider it. Gary Heald has his bas- ketball team working HARD.. it is well worth while to drop in at the gym and see them at workouts... Monda- ys at 7.00, Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 4.15, Thurs- days and Fridays 3.00(all pm of course, although the way Gary drives them,am would not shock us). Lots of competition for spots f on the team, so the players are really trying. We exp- ect a lot of excitement from Gary and his charges this year. . , The hockey team is now / Gordie‘Pierce‘ Photo: The cagro, Cct. I Representing UPEI, Jan— et Ellis, Joanne MacLean, and Janet Trainer were se- lected-to play for the pr- ovincial team in the Cana— dian Women's Field Hockey Championships at Halifax this past weekend. This to- urnament created a lull in the schedule for the Lady Panthers but coach Lynn Crosbie will have them hard at work in preparation for their crucial contest aga- inst the Mt. A. Angels(??) on wednesday the 15th... game time is 2.00 pm... get out and give them your support. They'll also have Dal here next Saturday at 1:30. This is being writt— en on Sunday morning, and- as tomorrow is Thanksgiving Day, weare thinking of le— aving for a two day trip around either end of the A W09 who our mind which_as we go out the driveway. We think this (tourist-free) season the most beautiful of the year and recommend this expedi - tion to anyone so inclined. This trip, however, preven- ts US from commenting on this afternoon's soccer game with nationally top- graded Dalhousie... we'd like to report, though, that in a conversation th— is week, Vince Mulligan, coach of the team, expres— sed himself as being sat- isfied with the performan~ be of the team this year against more seasoned opp- onents... we should say that he said his boys sho-, wed great intestinal fort— itude but actually Vincie said "Guts"... he thinks that with the experience we are gradually obtaining, UPEI will be contenders for league honours within the near future.
