Mr. J. Hunter Duvar occupies & prominent place. The following poetical tribute is paid to him : The Montreal Gazette remarks that as the British lion looked at his tail yester day he was no doubt pleased to note tha the marks on that important appendeg made by the Yankee twisters correspon exactly with those on the hands of th politicians who were hanging on to the side of the tureen to kecp their heads ou of the soup. The last two weeks of the campaign were marked by the wildest anc silliest appeals to Irish prejudice on the part cf the Republican managers and news papers to vote against Cleveland's British policy. It is not a little creditable to th: vense of the Irish people that in Naw Yo k sity, the locality where these appeals were more freyuently made, the party that used them received its worst thrashing. Montreal Gazette : Five years ago, when Mr. Cleveland was Presiden‘, a treaty re lating to the Atlanvic fisheries was entered into, in modification of the treaty of 1818, and atthe threshold of the negotiations Sir Chrries Tupper proposed, on behalf of Canada, that the whole question of the commercial inti rests of the two countries should be taken up, and the settlement went out tolook for the Knight Templar and pickcd h rf ip prac ically undamaged. Considering the very unsat isfactory state of affairs in this regard in late yours, the satisfaction is mostly com parative. During the first seven months «1 this year, 23 067 recruits were raised. against 19 050 during the same period of 1891. The returns show that where on August 1, 1891, there was deficiency in Senate recommending the ratification of che Fisheries treaty of 1888 Mr. Cleve- land said: *'The treaty now submitted contains no provisions affecting tariff duties, and it was considered more expedient to a'low any change in the revenue laws of the United States to be made by the ordinary ~xercise of legislative will, and in promotion of the public interests.” The policy then enunciated may be expected to govern Mr. Cleveland’s policy in the n-xt four years, and we cannot, therefore, anticipate the conclusions of a reciprccal treaty of trade between the two countries. But what we may with a god deal of confidence count upon is the modification cf tariffs in the interest of freer commercial relations, Mr. Cleveland is on record as favoring friendly relations.
