Mr. Dawson- Appointment of Delegates- , ___ ~ - M.. 1 The meeting of the Lots 27 and 28 Farmers' Institute at Middleton was held 'on Tuesday' 15th Inst, at 2 p m and was fairly well attended, those present taking an active part in the talk on the Dairy Cow. An address was expected that after- noon frcm Rev. A. E. Burke, of Alberton, but he being unavoidably absent from the Island, the President, Mr. Craig, sug- gested the ideato continue the talk on the Dairy Cow, which was the subject under consideration at the last meeting of this institute at Klnlrora on the 8th lnst., and at which meeting Walter Simpson, Esq., of_Bay View. read a paper on the subyect. He, Mr. Craig, thought that very much more might_ba brought out on this live topic of the day and in- vited those present to join in and make this meeting as interesting and instructive as possible. Quite a number of the farmers responded to the cali and the talk was kept up till Eve o`cicck. Many good points were made-some-very interesting experiences were told-some figures were given to show that some herds of cows were more than paying for their keep. It was also shown that more vigorous weeding out of unprofitable milkers was needed, and more attention given to raising more forage crops for the time of drcuth, and fall, and early winter feeding. It was suggested by seine that too much attention was lavlshed on breeds and pedigrees and not enough cars to the real dairy cow as some good types of this animal had been produced by nearly all of the different breeds. The talk along those lines was well kept up by the farmers and this meeting was both interesting and instructive, many taking a very prominent part. It was regretted that more of our young men who are the coming farmers of our country, did not join in with their opinions and ideas and show that they yet will make thilir mark in the agricultutalsffnirs of their native pro- vince, and mean to stick right to the old farm. Delegates were appointed to attend the meeting at Charlottetown on 30inst to confer with the Dominion Packing Co. on the differences that now exist in regard to the live hog business. .l. W. Callback of Augustine Cove, sud Chas Craig ofMiddleton, were the men chosen, and it is presumed these men will give a good account of themselves on that day. The evening meeting was opened at 7.30 with the president in the chair. itsv. Mr. Dawson of Tryon addressed the meeting ina good, sensible, masterly speech- showing that the farmers needed better education, more intelligence in the affairs of the day-more reiinment in and about their homes and well posted in the cur- rent tcplcs of the day, not omitting politi- cal aii`airs, and able to vote intelligently, so trying to do away with the boodlers and designing politicians. Good sense and sound logic was a charactcristlci Quite a number of the farmers followed l in the same strain on this subject of, better education, especially along agricui-` tural lines, and the speeches being inter spsrsed with some good music marie the meeting very interesting and pleasant. ‘ After a vote of thanks was tendered Aoihem. and the meeting dispersed, appearing to have enjoyeds good time with appreciation, and expecting another Instituto meeting at Tryon next Tuesday, 22nd Inst., at 1.30 p, m.
