' ransomss , oi the 1st Charlottetown Company of the Girl Guides; and I want to speak on the story of the girl who served her King by carrying meg- sages to him from his friends. King David is an exile from his city and his throne. His own son has betray- ecl him. turned traitor and installed himself as King. And now poor David is hiding for his very life in the dens and caves oi the earth. But some oi his loyal friends have stuck to him, and just now they are taking every possible measure m protect his life. ‘ And in order to do this they must maintain close and frequent touch with the city, so that messages may safely come and go between the King and his friends. And so day after day two young men, who were fondly attached to the King, Jonathan and Ahimaaz, journey to a certain well Just out- side the walls oi the city, where trusty messengers may bring the latest news from the palace. fliers is but one u nnecting-link needed to get these messages to and fro. Who filled the gap? A girl. The story goes that ‘a little maidservant un- dertook the hazardous duty oi con- veying the messages from the palace to the well where the two young men messengers waited. This she did again and again at the risk oi her life. ‘ Now, this story gives me fine standing-ground from which to speak about the noble service which a girl can render if she will. Just notice one or two things which stand out in the action of this Girl Guide-for that is what she was, a Girl Guide. First of all, she was on the right side, and she was not afraid to show lt. She was on the side of the rightful King. The man who had stolen the throne from King David was a iisurper: he had no right to be there. The usurpefs side was the strong side and the popular side: but this girl wanted to be on the right side. I do not need to tell you girls that the strong side and the popular side 1s not sl- ways the right side. There are more people out of chiurch this morning in your heart to serve the King. And it all counts. After all, it is perfectly true that the cause and Kingdom of the King, Jesus Christ, has prospered more by reason of the little things and the hidden things that have been done for it than by the loud and showy things. And so, I‘ again ask you in the name of this Girl Guide who served her King, that even though you think you cannot do much to set Jesus Christ on the world's throne, you do what you can, and do that little with a wlu. And then, we cannot help notic- ing what a. fine quality there was in. this Girl Guides service. She carried her messages in what would be called today “the danger zone." She was practically serving between the trenches of two opposing arm- ies. She was taking her life in her hands, for, in the eyes of the King's enemies, she was nothing better than a. spy, and we know that once a spy is caught it ls short shriit for him or her. And what were the fine qualities that girl must have had to do the work slie did? She must have had, to begin with, love, love for her King and his cause. She must have had the quality of obedience, of doing exactly and without question what her superiors fold her to do. She must have had courage, for she could never have faced the dangers she did had she not been a. plucky girl of the first water. She must have had self- control for this is o. quality that is absolutely necessary in the impor- tant work she undertook to see through. She must have had the spirit of self-sacrifice: probably she knew quite well that. her next jour- ney might be her last, and still she carried on. And those are the qual- ities that must mark, in some de- gree or other, any oi’ you who wish- es to be a heroine. The sill Who 11118 such qualities is rich though she has not a dollar to her name. And it is within the power of every Elli to cultivate these high, fine quali- ties. Is it not s. very significant thing that it was a girl, not a boy 11111 Can you look forward to a “second Honeymoon” with all your expenses paid by‘ Life Insurance? If not, do a little planning now. ‘Put your savings to work for you in Life Insurance. It will he the happiest investment you ever made in your life.
