McDougall, of Cape Breton, seconded the amendment. ‘The vote being taken on the amendment, there appeared for it Stairs, Daily, Paint, McDougall, of Pictou, ‘and others. Ray voted against it. The total vote against it was 82. The Main motion was carried. Gladstone Retreating- Lonpon, April 1. It is rumored that Gladstone has given indications of a disposition to retreat from the bolder outline of his Irish policy. The Pall Mall Gazette says: The hostile tone of the Scotch Liberal press, as well as that manifested in recent public meetings, has caused some of Gladstone’s closest friends to doubt that the Scottish members will support the Premier in any very broad scheme for Home Rule for Ireland. Parnell sees this diffi- culty plainly, and is perfectly willing to have Gladstone conform his policy to the exigencies of the situation, and modify his Irish proposals until they resch declara- tions that will suit Scottish views without alienating Irish, Mysterious Fire. Toronto, April 1. A fire this morning destroyed the top flat of the Mail building occupied by tho Telephone Company. The company’s Joss is $20,000, and the building is damaged to alike amount. It is supposed that the fire was caused by some defect in the electric wires. LATER. The origin of the fire is enveloped in mystery. Tbe night operator of the Tele- phone Company says that he was pounced upon by two men who gagged him and robbed him of his month’s pay.
