I i MURNING llllllllllll i " 'fri' ll D TUESDAY, NOV. 13, 1900. Tl-IE OPPOSITION LEADERSHIP. l The definite decision of Sir (lliarle Tupper to retire from political life is nrt ly no one ofthe younger members of ei- therparty put forth such strenuous eii`orts during the campaign, or covered so large a. part of the country as did the veteran Conservative Chief. He has done what he could, and no uian of his party could have done more or probably as much as he to achieve success. Besides, his cheerful manner ofaccepting defeat without bit- terness has created a warm feeling ot re- gard for him throughout the country and many of those who were politically oppos- ed to him will regret the withdrawal of so conspicuous a figure from Canadian public life. He has made his exit with the dignity befitting along and eminent career. Sir Charles Tupper's retirement in- volves the selection of a new leader for the Conservative party in Canada, and speculation is already alert asrto the prob able choice. Under ordinarynjtions one of three or four persons vi-oulh\ be clearly indicated, but the conditions alre not ordinary; they are extraordinary. In the tlrst place all the men of the first- rank and many of the second rank have met defeat at the polls. In the next place it will be observed that three fourthsof the members who will represent the Conseiv~ ative party in the new Parliament come from the single Province of Ontario, and of these something more than one half were not inthe last House. Of the en- tire party throughout the Dominion very nearly one half are new men. These facts must have an important bearing upon the choice of a new leader Had Sir CharlesTupperretired before the late election and had the choice of a new leader been then made the lot would al- most certainly have fallen upon one of the three men, Hon. Hugh John Macdonald, Hon. George E."Foster‘ cr Sir Hibbert fupper, with the chances best in the order that their names are-here sat dowr. But allthose men have been defeated. Hon: Hugh`John Maedonaldyhardly sus- tained theparty expectations during the feated but has tailed to carry more than in the same plight with this welfhtadded cernetl. A camvtligll. and hencéthe ehoiee I le- “wr w fe-it »»-=»» if-tml ii--r p-was before. llr.Foeteris not only' del: ` one third of his Province. ` Si.; Hibbert is Conservatives have clearly the right as . . » si I JOB PRINTER as choosing a» leadeg is But the Onrario Conservatives have not among their members elect any one man _ leader. Hon John Haggart is ambitious and may press his claims, but he can hardly do so successfully. Sir Mackenzie _ Bowell, had he not once been_Premier and embroiled with his colleagues, might now be selected, but is not likely to be under the circumstances, nor would he, . nor Hon. Clarke Wztllace probably consent to the selection of either Mr. Foster or Sir Hibbert. The situation is therefore both diiilcult and complicated. We note that some of the Quebec Conservatives are pointingifout these difficulties and urging the selection of a. French Canadian leader as the best solution on the ground hope of restoring the party prospect* against the great influence of Sir Wilfrid Laurier there. “Great Haste is Not A " Jerzy people frost* fo lack to pull them through, and are often disagpointed.
