MUSCLE OR MACHINERY? N0 °¢h¢r engine costs so much per horle-power as the horse. lt is time we cast aside all senti- ment and habit in connection with the use of horses and use good common sense instead. _ Men work more for horses than hor- se” W°1”k f0\’ men. we- conclude after reading the latest data on horse chores and horse feed and horse cost. Most of the chores are dirty, disagree- able drudgery-personal service ren- dered to lower animals by men. Among the human servants of the horse we must count the harness-makers. tan- ners, buckle-makers, wrhi-p-makers. street cleaners. We must count stable builders, makers ot raw ma- terials- for stables, veterinary sub geous, hlncksmiths, hay-makers, hay- balers. makers and retailers of horse feed machinery, mowers, ralres. feed grinilors. etc. Add to these the ma- k"l’S `0f the raw materials, and thc rail-wny men who supply the transpor- tation. and the number ol' horse vn- lets is amazing. Edison once iulld that it llorl-in is the poorest motor ever built. Ile oats ton pounds of fondfor evnry hour ha works, Ha rats twelve thousand pounds ol' food a yoaF'.` lie eats thc whole output of live ncres. Anil yet a recent U. S. government. report. shows that rt farm horse nvol-ages three and n halt hours work it _(lay. lin tires in six hours. Horses have well-known race suicide tendencies; and oven when n. colt is born, he re- 'iuires four. years to develop into n work horse. _ In Western Canada we find the shor- tage of horses most cc-nspicuolis. To olow the two hundred million new acres of prairie land requires the po- ver oi’ i'our milllc~n horses-twice as many horses as there are in tile whole Dominion of Canada. There is nh- solntely no -way, therefore, for the west to develop except by the use of tractors and anlomobilf.-s. The horse.i has been left behind in the development of lndustry and agri- culture. ln the days of the spade and the sickle, he was big and strong enough. but to-day he is utterly dwarf- ed by the untirlng strength o-t motor and tractor power. Both human muscle and horse mus- cle are too weak for the labors of to- day. Both men and hc-rses are too feeble and too slow for this age ot speed and tonnage. For instance, il mail can throw a fifty-six pound shot .wenty-three feet and nc- more. That is the world's record. But there are cannons that can throw n. 'liitty-six pound shot twenty-three miles. ’i‘he fastest swimmer goes about two miles an hour. The fastest walker :ees about eight m.lles nn hour. The fastest sprinter goes twenty miles all hour-for a distance. The fastest log team went four hundred 81111 twelve miles in eighty-two hours. The fastest trotter covered a. mile in one minute. ilfty-eight and a half seconds. As against these records ot' mus- cle, compare the speed of the taste-st trolley car which new over the rails at the rate of one hundred and thirty miles an hour. This is the day or tonnage. W0 have solved the long-haul DYONGUI with our railway trains, and bc-ate, but not the short-haul problem. One ship carries a ton of wheat thirteen miles iorone cent, whereas the average cost of hauling grain tc- market is nine cents per hundred pounds. lt costs more- to carry wheat ten miles by horse and wagon than twenty-three hundred miles by steamship. The solution of short-haul efficiency is not more teaming. it ls n0t H matter of more horses, more hostlers. more wagons. lt is a matter of new methods. ‘lt is precisely the same thing that solved the Di`0bl0m9 °f '““` nufactuning and bnildinir and flllllfl transit. it is the dl9Dl1\C|“E °f m“f“ cle by machinery. There is liolhilltt that cuts down costs like DOW" 'mil machinery. Manufacturers i'oi;ntl this out generations ago. and lilo Br- mers and other horse owners ot' to- day nre gradually finding it to be true. ; _ , . , _.__ __V_____ _____________._._.,,_._ _ v _ _ _ __ _ '_ _--g;»_-_-_-_-_ -' ' - -~ - - - - - 'r ' ' llad Eczema Doctors Failed lo Cure __,,__.._...-»--- for there is no treatment H0 D Barnes, Timmins. 0nt.£ on his forehead and around his 'l‘ho doctors failed to <10 him so I tried Dr. C&la.se’s Oint- thc recommen ation ot a nnil in a month's 'time tht! srricisnev oF os. chases LETTERS WH|CH PROVE THE OINTMENT AS A CURE FOR EGZEMA- - _ff_/1,,-J.. . __ ---*"'“'-'___' M George McNair, River Charles. l<`o|'i.nn:ite nro the mothers who rs. _- , the virtues ot Dr. Chase`s Oinb-iN. Such ts the boon of `lna~` chinery. A _ _ Why, then, do some farmers still persist in their old-fashioned method of travelling .to town and other places by horse power, when they might be -saving both ‘time and money with 'a light serviceable car. _ - Just now we are in a transition pe- riod. We do not entirely utilize hoo ses nor do without -them; but the etea- dy pressure of events is forcing us away from the horse power point of view, and compelling ns to take notice of motor power. The horse. like- the buffalo. has had his day. He is being replaced by the motor vehicle. just as the stage coach was replased by the steam cars. the' tinder~hox by matches, the cane-e by the steamshlp, the sickle by the self-hilnder, the flall by the threshing- machlne. the pen by the .printing press and the- needle by the sewing machine. Although the horse is really an un- profitable servant as compared to the motor car, we are still using him chiefly for two reasons. First, be- cause some of us are not quite- ready for the new machines which have been invented to take his place. -Second because some of us still have the horse habit. Our brains are accus- tomed to think in terms of horse po- wer, and we cling to the horse idea. Nothing is so hard as to ‘train the mind to an entirely new habit of thought. The horse owner has horse on his brain, and it is therefore tl slow and diillcult matter to move him from the horse habit to the motor _babtl.. When the first renpers were inventc-it the farmers had slckles firmly im- bedded in their minds. Mcflormni-_k fought against the sicklo'idea for f ur- teen yours before be soldihls slgrsi lrundred reapers. No other invention of man has been so ilsf.-fill ns tho wheel thai. drives lt- seit. Merely tho -wheel without thc engine was u. great invention. A wheel is vastly superior to logs from t.he point of view ol' efliclcncy. For thousands oi' years the wheels had to he pulled by legs-the' legs ol' some man or some animal. The disadvan- tage was not overcome till the inven- tion ot the s-team engine. Since- then wheels have been able to push themselves, and the internal combus- tion engine has been _developed into the handiest and cheapest _ of all wheel pushers. So far as power is concerned, tho horse is after all nn optical llliislon. lie is not as strong as he looks. Prac- tically all oi' his pulling is done with one hind leg. His front legs are pi- vots. mainly. They serve more tc- holil up the weight of the body than to pull the load. ‘ it a horse were made of steel. like a. motor, he would not need to be lar- ger than a waste-paper basket or a soapbox. Being a hay~mo_tor, and hay being an exceedingly wasteful fuel. he had to be' made enormously large in proportion to his power. The fact that he burns hay for fuel makes him very expensive. No other en- gine costs as much pei' horsepower ns the horse. When land was worth twenty doi~ lnrs an acre and horses were fifty fdollars apiece, there was no urgent need for engines. either in a city or on a farm. But today we have an en- ‘tirely different situation. Land has gone up, in price, and somewhat in quality, through the development ot' scientific agriculture. Horses have gone up in price but not in quality. Engines. on the other band, have gone up in quality and down in price. They were never so strong and so low-pric- ed as they are today. ` This being the case there can be only one end to the whole matter. The laws ot business (and farming is bu- siness) ure as inevitable as the laws of nature. Business swings toward the lowest costs. as inevitably as the wa- \ters fall over the cliff at Niagara. No matter what our theories may be, the 'hc-rse: is going out and the motor is ' coming ln. because-the engine is more lfit to survive. nom. -analysts- ._ _ _.,__,, . ';-` . -_ Cohen Hotel. ll. D.
