Montague is seen as ideal location for new industry More than $100,000 was spent , fm the Montague area on new homes and renovating during the past year with excel- lent prospects in evidence for greater expansion in 1962. This amount was in addition to the cost of a new elementary school built at a cost of $170,000. Although the latest census did sot show much increase in population for the town proper, a definite increase has been noted in the area bordering the town’s .imits. The town with its many. chur- ches, excellent schools, skating and curling rinks, theatre, ar- mouries, modern bakery, cem- ent block plant, feed milis, along with a federa! building, housing RCMP headquarters, fisheries and customs offices, makes Montague an ideal loca- tion for additional _ business firms. The town hall contains the telephone office, public health office and fire hall as well as the council chambers. AGGRESSIVE COUNCIL At the present time the town is fortunate in having the most aggressive town council in a number of years. Councillors in- elude a druggist, veterinarian, high school principal, a retired businessman, the owner of a farm machinery business and a man who owns and operates pos- sibly the largest hoggery in the province. The town clerk is also a pro- ors to spend a carefree and en- | joyable holiday. An infant but highly promis- ‘ing tobacco industry would ap- |pear at this time to offer the greatest economic potential for the Montague area. Although planted late the approximately 8-acre crop of last year is re- ported to have given.a top qual- | ity yield. An increase in plantings of up to 300 acres has been forecast for this year by the agriculture minister. In addition most grow- ers will have their own green- houses for seedling production and this will mean earlier plant- HG wih premier yield petee This new industry will serve to increase business for both local banking houses, put more money in circulation and mcst | likely will bring in a number of new families. ECONOMIC BOON It would appear today that. this new industry will eventual- | ly prove to be a tremen- \dous economical boon to Mon- gressive businessman and May- | or.Bruce H. Yeo, who has been- chief magistrate for many years, has always aimed for town im- provement on a “pay-as-you-go” policy. Tax collections are at a peak, services are being steadily im- proved and-new fire fighting equipment has been ordered. This equipment is underwriter approved. Montague, reflecting the trend all over the Island, enjoyed its greatest season in tourism dur- ing 1961. A record number of vis- itors from all parts of Canada as well as the U.S.A. and other countries visited the town and made special visits to the Gar- den of the Gulf Museum, found- | ed by the town's live-wire Board of Trade. MOTEL BUILT The year saw a new, modern motel constructed at Pooie’s Corner; continued expansion and improvements at Brudenell Park, and the purchase of the Gordon property adjacent to the park for use as a golf course. These additions will lure even more tourists to this area in future years. As usual large number of vi- sitors saw Moore’s Sanctuary, historic Brudenell Island and Brudenell Point. Adding impetus to the growth of the tourist industry in 1962 will be the establishment of ano- ther park and fishing area at Sutherland’s Stream, and the in- auguration of a boat club. The property at Sutherland’s Stream was purchased by the town for use as a fishing and park area while the boat club will be established by Wendall MacMillan. Mr. MacMillan recently pur- chased a waterfront property in Montague and will open his boat club this summer. He owns a@ number of boats all govern- ment approved and. all staffed by qualified skippers. He will conduct boating tours, deep sea fishing, family outings, water skiing and other events. An active Board of Trade, good hotels, cottages and re- staurants and such events. as the Lower Montague Regatta and the Dundas Plowing Cham- tague and the surrounding area, In the field of education Mon- tague regional district will take a back seat to no other district in the province and the record of the town itself is equally as enviably. Tremendous strides forward have succeeded in making Mon- tague Regional High School the largest and one of the most suc- cessful in the province. With the construction of a new 14 room elementary school : boast- ing a Grade A teaching staff the formal education of youth in this area would seem to be well tak- | en care of, Scholastic records for the re- gional unit show Montague stu- dents holding a high spot in provincial examinations. The new $170,000 elementary school is already filled and a 10- room addition to the regional unit fs earmarked for the future, with facilities to be made ayail- able for a vocational training | unit. This combined with a top- | ‘notch physical training program | in both schools and the possib- ility of the addition of a Grade 13 point the way for the bright- est of futures in the field of edu- jeation for the Montague area. SPORTS ACTIVE In the field of sports, this area has much to offer to assure con- tinued skating and hockey for the youth of the town, the town council has taken over operation of the skating rink. With the advent of the region- al auditorium. Many students for the first time have experien- ced the pleasure of playing their first basketball game, their first lesson in tumbling and pyra- mid building, and all the other indoor sports which are taught this year for the first time in this area. Montague also has one of the most active curling clubs in the province and it has sent repre- sentatives to Dominion Play- downs in the MacDonald Brier, and three times to the Domin- ion Legion playdowns. The Montague schools have al- ways placed high in Provincial Sport meets and it is felt that now a sports instructor is avail- able, their record will become even better. Sport fishing has always been a summer pastime enjoyed by many and with the co-operation of the Department of industries | and natural resources, the Fish and Game _ Association and a number of local residents have constructed a number of Public fishing dams which provide even more enticement for the many ‘anglers who visit this area an- nually.
