Some of our contemporaries are very foolishly charging us with inconsistency, because having said that we “accepted the situation’ on the School question, we still point out the defects of their Act, end the incompetence with which it is administered. We said that the tion of Denominational Education having (yUes- been decided against us, we were not go ing to fight that battle again, nor are we. But we never said we accepted the School Act. Inthe very article to which they refer we said there were many things in itof which we disapproved. Do they suppose we are not going to point them out to the people? And certainly we are not going to be silent about such matiers as Mr. Montgomery’s dismissal and the appointment of two of the Trus- teesof Mr. W. D. Stewart’s school on the Town Board, and of Mr. Stewart’s School Master as Superintendent. e~D OG ATTEMPTED HIGHWAY ROBBERY. A PLUCKY OFFICER AND AN EXCITING CHASE, On Monday night three employes of the contractors for the erection of the Lunatic Asylum were met on the ‘‘ Lower Road,”’ in the vicinity of Kensigton, by four men. It is reported that the latter ordered the em- ployes to halt, produced a revolver, and demanded “ money or watche:.” The em~« ployes, however, presented their revolver, and the would-be robbers made off—taking with them only a pair of shoes belonging to one of the party. The facts were brought to the notice of the Civic authorities by Mr. James M. Butch. er, and, as a sufficient number of Polices men could not be spared to make the ars rest, Mr. Butcher volunteered—if assisted by one policeman—to try to bring the rob~ bers to justice. Policemen McGregor and Cameron were detailed for the service, and C. Moleyneaux—four in all—started in pursuit. After searching in the woods at Kensington some time without success, the rendezvous of two of the would be high- Wayman was found, and an exciting chase commented. The Policemen acted splendidly. One of the men was fairlyrun down. The other took to the bushes but was closely followed by Policeman Cameron, dislodged from the covert and brought within the range of Mr, revolver, At the command to “stop,” with the revolver at full cock, levelled at him, he ‘‘stopped”’ suddenly, The men—John Power and Tom Smith, two well-known characters—are now in custody, Butcher's ? a an > ++ << -+ o Pauut’s Cataotic Cruurcn, of this town, has been provided with a new Bell, weighing over seven hundred pounds, which was made by the McShane Bell Co., Balti- more. This fine Bell has been presented by Francis Malone, Esq., DeSable, and for this generous act Mr. Malone deserves the most heart-felt gratitude of the Catholic people of this town. It is not often that we are called upon to record such an act of generosity, —Progress, St. “ > A rassenaer by the nine o’clock train on Monday night complains that the ‘news boy on the train charged him seven cents for an Orange “which weighed less than two ounces, and could be spanned between the thumb and fore finger, and which withal was not of the freshest quality ;” and adds, ‘Surely the Agent who has charge of these things will see the policy of more moderate prices, and consequently better sales. He need not think that because the travelling public are hemmed in, they are compelled to buy; for very few care about being ‘salted’ in this fashion, and it will give your road a bad name. To this, of course, we have no ob- jection; but there is one feature of the case to which we wish to call special attention. It is this: An impression has gone abroad that in the complica‘ions which arose some years agoin this Bank, Mr. Heard was in some way dishonorably connected. In case any persons unacquainted with Mr. Heard may have given credence to the reports put in circulation, we may state that during the searching investigation, which lasted for six days, not one single fact was discovered which could in any way injure Mr. Heard’s character as an honest and an upright man. On the contrary, the evidence of several of the Directors went to show that the Bank had not slightest suspicion of Mr. Heard’s integrity. Even the Judge, in his charge to the jury, said he wished it distinctly to go forth that Mr. Heard came out of this busi- nessi as he always did when he appeared before the Court, with a clean record.— Argus. : Shipping dutelligence.
