secret at the time that Sir llodinund, owing to considera-
tions of health. desired to hand over the Premiership to
one of his colleagues. but there was no one ln the ministry `
upon whom thc ('onservativc majority could agree as his
successor. Sir ltodtnond spent tho greater part of the fall
and winter in thc South. and _meantime there were con-
tract scandals disclosed involving officials for which Sir
Rodmond decided the administration should shoulder con-
stitutional reoponsibimy though. there was absolutely
no reflection. direct or lndlrect, upon the honour and
integrity of the inlnlstry.
A+ thc- Conservatives were in a majority of seven, it
can t-uslly be sccn that the mere resignation of Sir Rod-
mond's niinlstry would not have helped the Opposition
much; indeed it would have been less than an empty
compliment. lt would have been an embarrassment to have
culled upon them to take oflice. ln order to facilitate Inat-
ters. not only did the Roblin Ministry resign olflce, but
they arranged that ten of their party should resign their
seats ln_lhe House and permlt Liberals to be elected in
their place by acclumatlon, Thus another general clec-
tion ln the Province was avoided. and the Liberals will
rccelvc thc support of the new Opposition until such time
ss lt may be deemed necessary to mslte another appeal to
