D I C I N E 9. ~’ 5 ' Cuuimu, Suvnio SOAPS, Y. -. 50- IlieCape,'’ comfinrthe following explanato- ry rcniaflis :--"\Pors-ms who do not pay lwesieeial attention to nautical matters, are ‘likely enough to suppose that, coiisidering the la; e number of vessels at sea, the sur- face oI‘the great ocean must be dotted over, 'I‘his, however , is not the case : the ocean, like the land, has its frequented highways, ‘and its wide regions of loneliness. Ifan ob- server, furnished with a forty-Herschel-tel- escape power of vision, could be elevated to a height great enough to give him a view of the W 0l9,.Atlantic, he would be struck by beholding hundreds ofvessels following one another upon certain lines along a very ir- regular course, while over a very large por- tlomoftheaurfuee not a sail would be visible. Thus he would see the ships which leave this country for the Cape or India, pursue at the first a south-westerly course, until they reached the neighbourhood of Madeira, lll"n keep more directly to the snutli, at a safe distance from the African coast, until they crossed the line; then stretch away again to the south-west, in the direction of South America, till they gain the zone of Weqterlyovtind ; and finally, making a re.- ther sharp turn into these winds, go blowing along before them to the eastward till they arrive at the Cape, or else, if so directed, pass to the Southward ofit. On the return voyage a siniilar circuitous route is persued, although the cources are to some extent reversed, the widest circuit, or deviation from tlwdirect line, being made in the north- 0"! llisleld of the southern hemisphere. In the exlellllve spaces on either side of these equented routes few vessels will be seen, Here and there an African trader might oc- oaeienlly be perceived, dodging from port to; port, or a slaver scudding swiftly across tllc ocean—perhaps with a royal cruiser fol- lowing steadily upon her track, like a fierce bl09d-hound in persuit.” THE MORIIONS. Large numbers of emigrants professing the Morrnan faith, have recently arrived or are on their way to this country from Europe There are new in St. Louis from 3000 to 4000 mormoas, many of whom are making urru ements to leave for the Salt Lake. The t. Louis News says 2-,- " The Grand Tower, upon the 29 March, had 225 Dance, all Mormons, and bound for Salt lake, The John Simonds, in this morning (Marcll 30) has 240 English and ‘Vclch ofthe satire faith, and bound for the same destination. Large numbers of emi- grants professing this creed are on their way trom urope. A ship was at e Balize when the John Simonds left New Orleans, with about 400 of them on board.” On the other hand it is’ stated that many of the En lish and Welch em’ ants in St. Louis refiise to emigrate I\It't lei-, having only professed the inorinon faith with a view to avail theniselves ofthe cheap facilities for eiiiigrali Ill alii Jed by tile in >l'lI‘IUlI agents. Tue accessicins to the p-blllllfltlllll ofthe great Salt Lake niust be mainly from foreign countries. In connection with this fact, it is worthy of remark that most of the Americans who are members of the community are sma_i-ting under a sense of injustice and o pression-either experienced by themselves or by their church when located at Nauvoo. Tligy are subjected likewise to some re- sti-pints by the government established over them by congress, and various other causes combine to make them disaffected towards our‘ country. It ‘would not be surprising therefore, if serious troubles should grow out of their pe- culiar position at some liiture day. Their rapid increase in population and resources, the isolated position --their location upon the anaine overland route to California, and their religious fanaticism —all will tend to niakc them formidable neighbours if they become seriously disaffected. It has been the policy of the government to treat the Mormons with moderation and forbearance, tolerating their religious dogmas and pre- cepts , and their social relations, and allow- ing them to manage their own affairs with as flttleinterference as is consistent with maintaining the jurisdiction ofthe general priwarnrrient over the teritory. The continu- ance nfthis policy is dictated by a wise and prudent forethought. Error must in the end give way to truth ; but the day when this result will be attained cannot be hastened by arbitrary legislation or by a stringent go- vernment, even though that government he sustained by the power of the bayonet.
