Kind words cost little, but pay large dividends. The World says there is talk of Earl Spencer ere long been appointed viceroy ot India. Several persons are being prosecuted at Brantford for infringement of tbe Dominion liquor license law. It is said Jay Gould is very angry at Wm. H. Vanderbilt because the latter refused to help him out of financial dif ficulty. There is a world of d:tference between being independent and being disagree, able, though muny people get the two badly mixed. An order-in-counci] has been passed for transferring to the Hudson's Bay Railway Co., the land granted at the last session of parliasnent. Private advices from Hon. Mr. Me pherson report that his health has been cempletely restored by the trip to England. He will return to Canada ear- ly in August. A movement isin progress for fed- erating the various colonizing societies which have recently become numerous in Germany, witha view of securing greater eflicieacy by unity of action. Late despatches irom theGerman colony in Syria show thatit is increasing in numbers and prosperity. A syndicate is now trying to arrange for the con- struction of a railroad to market the — produce, at a cost of $30 000,- The Canadian Pacific contractors n the Rocky mountains are employing all the men that come along. Wages run from $1.80 to $2.25 ; board $5 per week. Contractors’ agents visit the end of the track every day to hire new ar. rivals, but the class of immigrants com ing in this year, according to the Win ipeg Sun, embraces comparatively few laborers. They are mostly men with a little money who prefer going upon land. Itis much preferable that the great majority of immigrants into the Northwest should take to the lands, be- cause 4 more permanent occupation is afforded them, and their contribution to the wealth of the country begins at once. The reciprocity treaty between the United States and Mexico binds the United States to admit, duty free, twenty-eight articles. These are most- ly in the form of raw materials, and twenty-one of them are now on the {ree list. On the other hand, Mexico is to admit free of duty seventy-three articles, of which sixty-seven are now subject to aduty of over 80 per cent. Many of these articles are our manufactured products. This treaty is very advan- tageous to the United States, and now the thought oceurs, that, if it is a wise move to have recriprocity with Mexico, would it not be equally sensible to have retriprocity with Canada ! The Oil of Courtesy. Accurate fitting of the parts of a machine is not ail needed. Oil is re- quired. Our life functions bring us together, our movings and doings work- ing together. Something is needed to make all work smoothly together. Good manners, cour tesy, pleasant be- haviour isthis oil which is needed, Some say what have we to do with good manners between master and workman ? Every creaking bearing in the social machine means loss of power. All heat- ing and friction must be avoided “Fair words butters no parsnips,” is an old adage. But they do much in a_ store where the clerks are attentative and obliging. Customers will be more likelytocome. Soinali things.
