Last year tho Kinsmen Club of Summerslde went in for hockey lor the youngsters in a big way. Bil with the absence of any an~ nouncsment as to whether the Crystal Rink would open. there was much concern that they might be deprived of the opportunity this year to skate and play hockey. The plans for this season call .or an open air rink with an ice surface and same size as that of the Charlottetown Forum. This rink will be located on Granville gtraet. on property owned by Mr. George Williams, who is giving the use of the land free of any cilarizes. The rink will be operated for the benefit of the children by the Kinsmen Club, with the co- operation of the Town of Sum- nierside and the Department of Physical Fitness. A board fence will be con- structed. work commencing today. and there will be dressing rooms for the boys and girls. The rink will be managed and the coach- ing done by Mr. James Hogan, the iilllsmen athletic supervisor. The town is providing light and water free and will assist in snow. re- moval. Mr. Lorne Mat-Farlane and lvfr. Lorne Driscoli are giving the‘ use of their tractor. which. with the town grader, will be used in 'E-\'9iling the field. A prominent citizen, desirous oi seeing that the children have proper hockey and skating facili- ties, has donated the sum of $200 to assist in defraying expenses. Every rhlld in Town will have the benefit of free skating time liurlng the week and any young- ster that wishes to play hockey will have an opportunity to play on a team. It is not intended to compete with the local rink. if it opens, ‘and games will be played there as they have in the past. Neither is it the intention to oper- ate the rink commercially for adults unless there is no other rink in operation. This announce- ment will como as a relief to the children who wore beginning to worry about hockey and skating this winter. Although an outdoor rink is not the best arrangement f0: a Town the size of Summer- hidfl, it is much better than no arrangement st all-s. THE GUARDIAN, CHARLOTTETOWN PAGE SEVEN The opening move to have the City Hockey League swing into action again this year was taken last night when the City Hockey League again ire-elected Sammy Doyle and Gordon Bennett to top executive positions and although matters are still in a rather indefi- nite stage it appears that if oer- tain matters can be ironed out satisfactorily local fans will again witness a troll-balanced league in operation. O O O Tha four original members of the league. Saints,‘ Prince of Wales, Navy and Legion had rep- resentatives present last night and it can bc-said that Saints, al- ready considered the strongest club of the four and Navy will bc definite starters. With Legion and Prince of Wales ii; is a differ- ent matter. o e e Taking Prince of Wales first it has been a wcll known fact that there is n definite lack of suit- able playing material due to grad.- uatloii last spring leaving but three of last year's squad to form a. team around.’ Efforts are being made to strengthen tvitli some ex-P.W.C. players a move that has evidently met with the approval of the stu- dent. body but until the players in mind have been contacted mana- ger Gordon Bennett will not. be able to give a definite answer. O l O To put it in, Bennett/s own vrords “We would like to remain in the league bill. not at the ex- pense of hurting the league's popularity any." By it he meant that if suitable liockeyisls could not be lined up the teams would not be able tn furnish stiff en- ough ccmomillon and thev would rather enter a team in either ju- rcnile or junior ranks. O O The Legion presents a scmewhat different problem. The other day it was said they would not enter a squad. Last night that. was rescinded and if proper financial arrangements can be made the squad, with a goodly number of last year's champions available will again be participants. e a a However, even though the above presents a rather unclear picture officers of the league together with those present last night feel that in a matter of a couple of days rumors that have been go- ing the rounds the past week or so will be cleared up satisfactorily and date of the opening gamr- should be released after the next meeting. .' e l e , And then there is also the strong possibility of a Summerside team being seen in action during the winter months. To many perhaps this may seem out of tho quas- tlon due to the beating a Sum- mersicle team absorbed last season in their only league start but it is quite evident that Summsrside will be able to ice a. much strong- er squad this year. ' I Windy Steele, who lut year coached Moncton Hawks to the Maritime Senior championship and took turns on the blades him- self is available as is also "Boo" Morrison, another capable young hockeylst. Then titers is Charlie Delghan who can play a lot of hockey and these three together with other Summerslde boys and hockeylsts available from the air- port at St. Elennofs should give Summsrsids a‘ pretty iflll‘ lflllfld- O O Word from Summerslds is to the effect that they would liks admittance to the league. There lls no doubt but their application will be well thought over and lo- cal officials realising that Bum- merslds improved considerably from last year and that this year they have better and more ma- terial to choose from would grant them admittance. e e ‘e Hare is how Isa (Tyre-re of the Montreal Star viewed Can- adians‘ two defeats last week-end one of thorn, the first being s 9-1 lacing handed them by Bol- the poorest display of hockey Ce- nadisns have shown in five years at the Forum.
