Vance or I‘IONI:8‘l'Y.——An old trader among the Northern Indians, who had sortie years ago establislted hitti- self on the Wisueva, tells a good story, with a tnoral worth reeollecting, ahoitt the first trials of trading with his red custo- tpers. The Indians, who etidently watt- ted goods. and had botlt money (which they called shuns tilt) and furs, flocked about his store, tintl examined his goods, but‘ for some time bought nothing. Fi- nally, their chief, with a large body of his followers, visited him and accosted him with, ‘How do, Tltomas, show me goods, I take four yard calico, three coon- skins for yard, pay you bv,m-by-—-to-tnor- row.” received his goods and left. Next day he returned with his whole hand, his blankets stuffed with coon skins. “ Ant- erican man, I pay now,” with this he be- gan counting out the skins, until he had handed him over twelve. Then after it tnoment’s pause, he offered the trader one more, remarking as he did it,—“'l'hat’s it,” "I handed itback,” said the trader, “telling him he owed me but twelve, and I would not cheat him.” We continued to pass it back and- forth, each one asser- ting that it belonged to tire other. At last he appeared to be satisfied, gave me a scrutinizing look placed the skin in the folds of his blanket, stepped to the door and gave a yell, and cried in a loud voice: “Come come. and trade with the pale face, he no cheat Indian ; his heart big.” He then turned to me nitd said: " You take that skin, I tell Indian no trade with you—-drive you off like it dog--—but now you Indian’s friend, and we yours.” Be- fore sundown Iwas waist deep in furs, and loaded down with cash.
