So you want some articles from UPEI students... Well, I’m a Dens Welitor ’ student of our prestigeous little university and I’d like to say a few things about a topic which is felt but seldom discussed openly. Hopefully my opinions won’t offend anyone, but perhaps they will stir up some discussion. Here’s the beef. As a UPEI student with friends at the Vet College I see two sides of a situation. The situation is animosity between UPEI students and vet students. Has anyone else noticed any tensions in this particular area? Have you maybe, noticed it from your professors. This letter concerns a column you ran last week called Celebrity Corner. That was the best column in the Gem in years. The con- cept of profiling athletes is a very good one. Please keep this col- umn going. Since there are so many athletes, why not profile two each week. Tell Winston Duncan to keep up the good work. Signed Second Floor Bernardine. Dear Editor, In short reply to Ian Mollison. The September issue of Harrowsmith has a good article on the plans for Nato low level training in Labrador —- Quebec. Anyone in- terested should read this and decide for themselves what the facts I can provide examples of these feelings from both sides of the fence. On the one hand we have the vet students who may possess certain negative attitudes towards us. Why? Well here is one exam- ple that may start to explain it. As you may be aware some classes are held in the AVC lecture theatres for UPEI students. When this are. first began the lecture theatres were quite new, very clean and free Tony Redds. : Anyone can contribute to The GEM. Submis- of grafitti. Now if you go into these tops have been scribbled upon. sions can be dropped off at the Barn, sent through VAX MAIL to GEM, or stuck on our door down in the basement of the Main building (B06). Our phone number is 566-0629 or 566-0530. We cherish typed and double spaced submis- sions or through VAX mail. For legal reasons, all submissions must include the author’s name and phone number. However, names will be withheld from publication on request. I know you are going to say “How do you know it wasn’t a vet student?” If you are friends with anyone from the college you will know the answer to this for yourself. They are proud of their facil- ity. Sometimes they feel we do not treat the College facilities with enough respect. Now for another side to the story. What about how the UPEI students feel about the bet students.Once again, here is an exam- ple to demonstrate my point. Certain students at out university feel that the bet students think they are too good to be associated The GEM is published by the University of with us. This may be due to the fact that: Prince Edward Island Student Union. Views ex- pressed are not necessarily those of the GEM staff, the UPEI Student Union, or of anyone in particu- lar. 1) They do not want Atlantic Veterinary College to be consid- ered part of UPEI. 2) They do not want to be part of the UPEI graduation ser- vices. They would prefer to have their own private graduation. cC I realize that there are very valid reasons for both these things. I am not going to say what they are since I believe it would be best for someone from the college to try and explain this. UPEI is in a unique position. It is a university that is com- prised of mainly undergrad. Maybe the tension arises since we are not used to dealing with grad students or professional students. What about UPEI student who are now members of the bet college? Did they notice any of this before or after going, there? I would really like to hear from any UPEI or vet students who have a reaction to what I have just said. I am not pointing fingers or making judgments. I am simply pointing out a situation I have / noticed. So, lets hear some response! IF YOU FIND MISTAKES It is my hope that by bringing this topic up for discussion we in this publication, please, consider that they are can hear both sides fairly and dispel any negative feelings between there for a purpose. We publish something for either side. everyone, and some people are always looking Loo for mistakes.
