However. it was the general feeling of the meeting that the gathering should be held earlier in the reason when weather con- ditions would be more favorable. Rcg Holman of 5- erside brought up the matter which was closest to the thoughts of most, of the members present - that of the possibility of reciprocal hunting licenses in the Maritime Provin- ces. However. he was told from the chair that it was felt. the time was not appropriate for the various Fish and Game Associations in the three provinces to press for such an arrangement. Island Deer Discussed Prince Edward Island": twelve deer also came in for mention dur- ing the meeting. After Hon. A.W. Macxenzie. Nova scotia's Minis- ter of Agriculture and Forest and Lands. had stated that his prov- ince was now over populated with deer and that 45,000 had been killed last year. Lawrence st. Clair Baird of Kentvlile. a past presi- dent nf the Nova Scotla Fish and Game Association said that if the Island deer do as well as Nova Bcotia's. it would leave nothing to be desired. He said that eleven deer had been brought into Nova Sco- tiia. back in 1394 at a cost of sins. They were released at Lake Jolly in Digby County and today the deer population of Nova scotia is a quarter of a million. Prince Edward Island is some- A.P.0. Island ponds are fertile. the water is cool in sum- mer. spawning conditions are good, there is an'abundanca of small trout. farm fertilizers wash into the stream enhancing fertility. and there are no predators in Island brooks. "The basic problem on the Is- lsnd is a scarcity of water of suit- able sise to rear trout." said Dr. smith who is in charge of trout surveys in the Mar-ttimea. He also spoke of a survey which has been going on at Montague pond for the past seven years. This 23-acre pond produces upwards of four thousand trout a year which Dr. smith termed "very good." In Prince Edward Island. he said. fishermen catch an average of two and one-half trout an hour all summer. In other Maritime fishing areas they catch only one trout an hour and only during the months of May and June. Dr. Smith, in the course of his talk. also spoke of the technical aspects of another trout experi- ment being carried out in Prince Edward Island. This one is at El- lersiie and has to do with sea trout. Experts are trying to estab- lish.what effect some new dam projects would have on sea trout. He said the Eilerslie experiment was unique in that fences -are maintained on the stream through- out. the entire year. In its efforts to improve trout fishing in the Maritlmes, his de- partment is trying to change trout environments and improve on na- ture. he said. Mr. Bruce Wright, charge of the eastern Canadian section of the Wildlife Manage- ment. Institute of Washington. D.C. end who makes his headquarters tr. Fredericton. N.B.. was another guest speaker during the first half of the meeting which waschalred by F.A.B. Jones. who is in Muskrat Trapper: Mr Wrlizht traced some of hire developments in the various ex- periments which are being carried on among waterfowl and upland name birds in the Maritimes. He spoke of a fivr-year survey of black ducks and mentioned the damage caused by muskrat trap- pers in areas where muskrats and ducks congregate. "Take the musk-. rat. trappers out of areas where breeding ducks and muskrats are concentrated." he said. spring rat trapping should be abolished April I each year. Mr. Wright said. and Prince Edward Island has taken the lead in controlling this partic- ular problem. Speaking of big game in the Maritimes. the Fredericton wildlife man said that the ”carryiiig cap- acity" or-range land in New Bruns- wick ls "near its peak" insofar as deer is concerned. There is "an overabundance of deer." One other thing that. Mr. Wright told the meeting and- something that. every member of the sportn- eral fine sportsmen films durins: the evening.
