Pigs and their Treatment. Pigs are immensely useful, and also very profitable, if the ‘y are properly i managed. A good breeding sow will | commonly bring a man more profit than a cow, and she will live on food the cow} woulda’t touch—food which would be otherwise wasted. She will bring litters of young in year, and two] uncommonly five litters in two years, if uu not carefully and intelligently managed. It is not an unheard occurrence for ot asow to bring thirty young ones per} annum, for a longer or shorter period, and, as these are usually worth a pound apiece at five or six weeks old,we | 5 have here a clear run of profit. A good litter of pigs, droppe d in April or May, just when the cows are calving freely, isa valuable addition to a dairy farmer’s stock-in-trade, and now is the time when breeding sows should be well looked after. Itis agreat matter that pigs, both | young and old, both store and fat, | should be moderately warm, housed in) piggeries which as free from! draughts as we like our stables be, | yet well ventilated withal. Warmth, in point of fact, etands in place of so much food—food that would otherwise | be required to maintain in the animal} are to system the measure of warmth which | we supply, or conserve, by the aid of} well-constructed building. And, as| well as being warm, pigs like to lie dry. They do cot enjoy having their lodging the cold ground, save in summer ; ner do they choose to wailow in the wet except when there is a great deal of caloric in the air. They do not want a huge lot of strawto bury themselves in, if only they have a bed which is dry at the bottom. Asa matter of experi- ence, we have always found pigs to do | as well without straw as with it—even in winter—so long at they had boards | on to lie on and the shed was tolerably warm. Gn many farms straw is no! object, and in this event the pigs ctf course will have plenty of it; but on others—on giass farms where little or no straw is grown—they wiil fo juite| as well without it with it, under the conditions we have specified. We mention these things because straw is altogether too valuable touse as mere | litter for pigs, when its use can just as | weil be dispensed with. as -_- The Points of Ayrshire Cows. At the anual meeting of the Ayr-| shire Agricultural Association recently, the secretary reported that at a meeting of directors held in the end of August, aletter had been read from Mr. J.) Lorae Stewart of Coll, suggesting that | the time had arrived for revising the points by which Ayrshire cows are} judged. Mr. Stewart, in his letter, | pointed out that in the year 1853) a committee was appointed by the! Association to fix certain points in| the Ayrshire breed which were to be held of most importance as| indicative of superior quality, and that | committee aceordingly did so. He} then went on to say :— | What I would suggest is that, consid. | ering the |: apse of nearly thirty years,| anether committee might very proper ly revise these recommendations, and re- issue them as a guide or standard for the breeders, buyers, and sellers of the present day. It is most probable that some modifications or alterations would now be made. For instance, in the third clause, the wedge- shape recome | mendation is thought to have had the effect of somewhat injuring the con— stitution of the breed, more especially, I understand, when sent abroad, and the committee would probably in this case reprint it as a saving clause. | | Then, again, these selected points, w hieh “are to be carefully attended to,” are not of equal imortance, but have a relative value; of this relative value there is no indication. The breeder is left to suppose that a wide- set horn is of as much importance in a dairy cow as a capacious milk vessel ! extending well forward. It might therefore be found advisable, were the i 1, Assets 30th April, 1882 ‘Subseribed cominittee appointed, to draw up aratio scale, say with a maximum of| 100, giving a preponderance to such | _ as are most worthy the attention breeders. Whstever bears indeed a the excellence of the dairy cow might reasonably fall within the scope of the committee's Jabours, and in this connection I would therefore add that | the committee might inquire info and | fully test the merits of the Guenon | system—mode of judging the milking | qualities by the bair markiogs about | the udder. Without commiting myse if in its favour, I may say that the system | is in foree in America almost univers-| ally, that the Jersey Secicty has for! many years given a special prize ter | Guenon-marked cows, and that the | British Dairy Association is to give a| speeial prize this year. <> <a fhe Great French Remedy, Dr. | LeDuc’s Periodical Pilis. 7 For \he eure of Leucorrhewa or White's Excessive of Wena.
