ANDREWS, Scotland, Sept. 26-.A proposal te revive the "lost ball, lost hole" rule of golf was de- feated at a business meetingof the Royal and Ancient Club, goveming body of the game, today. The rules of golf committee un- animously opposed the suggestion upholding the present rule allowing another shot from the original spot _rule also permits the playing of a provisional ball in cases of doubt. Sir Ernley Blackwell sought re- vival of the old rule on the grounds that the “provisional ball" innova- tion sometimes allows a player to profit by an indifferent shot. What they have accomplished ought fair- ly to be emphasized, not simply because it is a credit to them but because it has been an important contribution to national recovery. “ln 1932, under the stress of un- favourable market conditions, the fisheries production of the Domin- ion dropped in value to less than $26,000,000. In 1933, however, the fishermen increased this total by more than $1,500,000. Last year they brought production almost to $34,122,000, which meant a, gain oi nearly 38.165900 in two years. It was s. noteworthy achievement, significant both of the spirit and energy of the industry and of the improvement which has been tak- ing place in the economic situation. It is not only in value of produc- tion. moreover. that the signs of improvement are to be seen. Most of Canada's fisheries products are marketed abroad and since the middle of 1983 the export business has been increasing steadily. Last year the increase amounted nearly to 82,300,000 and the betterment has been continuing in 1935. Lire saving Organizations gave the Nielsen. technique 141 percent and unqualified endorsement. With the Niels/en method the op- erator kneels at the head of the patient, instead of astride his hips, puts pressure on the shoulder blades instead oi lower dovm on the rib structure, and at the con- clusion of each pressure permits his hands to slide to the patient's arms and raises them very slightly. By this small action, seemingly inconsequent, the operator removes the weight of the patients torso from his chest and makes it ex- pand so greatly as to cause_the lungs to accept almost double the 'quantity of air that can be taken under any other method. This slight lift lessens the num- ber oi forced respiration; to the minute. but causes an increase in the depth of each breath of a full 9° percent over the Schaeffer meth- od. I hope that ‘Fish Week' observance will be general all over the country this year and that it will have the effect both of stimulating popular interest in the further development of our prolific fisheries resources and of leading more Canadian families to use frequently our excellent fish foods, which are not only nourishing but have been found by scientists to be rich in vitamins and other health- building elements “More than 8,000 people find em- ployment in the Dominlon's fish- eries, and, of course. the industry is indirectly a source of employ- ment for many more of our cit- izens. With their dependents. these fishery workers make up a popula- tion equal to that of one of the larger Canadian cities. Like people engaged in other occupations, here support my belief that the néxt few years are to see our fishermen enjoying steadily better times. Canadians generally can help in making that condition certain by remembering that no better fish foods are obtainable anywhere than are produced by the Canadian fish- ing lndustry and by using them frequently."
