When the fierce north wind with his
airy forces,

hail comes
Rushing amaln down.
From time to time ln most countries
thunder storms occur, creating great
atmospheric commotion, sometimes
accompanied by wind of greater or less
violence, sometimes without Wind:
usually attended with a copious fall of
rain, and sometimes with hail. These
phenomena are ulways interesting,
sometimes startling and not always free
from danger. In the storm of Wednes-
ilay afternoon there was little Willd. B
copious fall of ruin, with bail in and
about the city at times.
The cumulus or thunder cloud may be
iuuch higher orlower, but usually fl0&l9S
at aheight of amiie to a mile and af huif
above the earth. It forms a mass of
vapor often of large area and frefiuently
lialfauiilc or more ln thickness. Such
clouds overcharged with electricity,
discharge electric flashes oi’ great volume
to the earth, or to other separate clouds.
ln some very rare instances the ilash is
upward from the earth to the thunder
cloud, and there are recorded instances
of persons being killed by such upward
discharge.
There are three recognised kinds of
lightning, commonly known respectively
as forked lightning, sheetlightnlng and
ball lightning. The recent storm gave
well authenticated instances ofthe ilrsit
and last of these-forked lightning, which
is common, and ball lightning which is
rare in this latitude, though quite
common ln the tropics.Sl1ectlllghl;ninghas
not the intensity of the other varieties,
and has no definite form but appears as a
moss of light. It is quite harmless.

line of light, dense, thin, and, well defined

Lightning sometimes kills, but there
are many hundred times more chances of
one being carried off by disease, and many
chances even that one will hc killed by some
other forin of accident rather than by
lightning stroke. Still the thunder storm
is appalling to many, and even the
electric condition of the atmosphere at
such times causes disturbance to nervous
persons. A few simple rules will usually
secure immunity from fatal consequences
even if the dwelling ls struck. Windows
and doors should be closed during ii
thunder storm. Telephones should be
dlsconnected. One should not sit near a
chimney or stove, or near a gas or wntci
pipe, or heating register, and the middle
of a room is safer than near a wall. At
night there is no safer place than in hed.
