Personal—Gossip. ‘ A prominent class leader in a Methodist | chorch, at Montreal, was discovered by his | wife to be carrying on an intrigue with a) young girl, member of his class. He was | immediately dismissed by the pastor, whom | j he threatens to sue for libel The English Army and Navy Gazstte says: ‘* We understand tnat the Pemee of Wal-s, | : ' at the urgent request of the Princess of | Wales, is bestirring himself to put down| the cruel sport of * pigeon shooting.” The ladies have formed a ring, and intend ‘ boycotting’ Hurlingham until the Gun Club discards the ‘ pretty dove’ and adopts the ‘terra cotta pigeon,’ a new invention which is being brought out under the pat- ronage of the Prince of Wales, and can be seen at work at the Ranelagh Club grounds.” Mr. Henry Irving, the eminent English | actor, lends his is.fluence to the temperance | cause in these words:—‘‘l have no hesita- | tion in saying that the use of stimulants | by actors when playimg is unnecessary and injurious. With very few exceptions, | dramatic artists must carefully abstain from | such when at work. all The late Mr. | Phelps carried this abstinence to a singular | extent. ‘What do you,’ inquired a triend, | ‘if you feel tired or thirsty when at work { ‘What do I du? replied the tragedian,’ bite my tongue’.” A charming and accomplished young lady | in London was s» badly burnt some months | ago by her clothes catching fire that her | life was de-paired of and a cleryman was sent for to administer spiritual consolation. To him the lady said: ** As I kaow that I am dying, I have a secret 1 wil! disclose to you only. I love you with my whol heart.” The prompt reply was: ‘ You must not die, but live to be my wife.” The lady acted upon the suggestion, recovered, and a week or two ago was married to the object of her affections. The House of Lords consists of 516 Peers. In pey or pension there noblemen receive £621,336 per annum. This, however, in cludes the amounts received by Peers of the royal family. The Peers have between them 14,268 527 acres of land, with a rental of £11 880,308. As, however, the income of the Duke of Westminster is only put down in this estimate at £37,145, many of those who derive incomes from ground-rents, mines, etc., are far richer than the above total, which is the amount received from agricultural land. Probably it would not be an excessive estimate to put down the total. incomes of Peers derived from al! sources at £15,000,000 which would make the income of each individual Peer average a trifle over £59,000 per annum. Mr, Gladstone has wonderful recuperative powers. Although after his arrival in Cannes, a few days ago, the doctors con- sidered that it would be necessary for him to abstain from work until Easter, he is to return to London at the end of the week, and will be in his place at the cpewing of Pariiament to give battle to all who venture to attack the policy of the Government. | Speaking of the marvellous virality of this great statesman, the J elegraph says that more than a generation ha» passed since, in conversation with a friend, Mr. Sydney Herbert, being at the time the most popular member of the House of Commons, re- marked :—‘‘ Don’t talk to me about Glad- stone's mind—it’s nothing compared with his body!” Mr. Herbert's words about Mr. Gladstone’s physics] frame have been fu'ly borne out. Thirty years and more have elapsed since they were spoken, and during the whole of that time Mr. Gladstone ha» worked at such high pressure and under the strain of anch remarkable responsibility as to lend historical point and emphasis to his college friend’sremark. To show how mar- velleus was the even tenor of Mr. Glad- stone's health during the first five-and- twenty years of his Parliamentary life, we may novice that for the whole of that time his only medical adviser was Dr. Hodgson who resided almost always in Bicmingham. Often has the Prime Minister been examin- ed, sounded, auscultated and what not, by medical friends, and, without a dissentient voice, they have all pronounced him to be “‘made of pin-wire.” It has frequently been remarked that great orators are gen- erally bad sleepers. But no speech, though prolonged as has often been the case with him, for five hours or more; no serious of | open-air speeches—whether delivered, as in Dale street, Liverpool, or spon Greenwich Commun, or at half-a-dogen spots in Mid- lothian—have, as a rule, been able to banish sleep from Mr. Gladstone’s eyelids.
