Wandrian from New York, EXTRA QUALITY. Cc. LYONS. Charlottetown, July 18, 1892. mwf jyl3 030 TONS HARD COAL — A Long Career. SIXTY YEARS IN ACTIVE JOURNALISM. On Tuesday last, the 9th ‘inst., Alexan- der Lawson, of the Yarmouth Herald, entered upon his sixtieth year of active journalism. The Boston Globe, of Monday, published a cut of the veteran editur, and an appreciative sketch, in the course of which it says : ‘*To have been at one time the youngest and to be now the oldest newspaper man in the Maritime Provinces, if not in Cana- d», is the unique distinction of Alexander Lawson, the vetern editor and proprietor of the Yarmouth Herald, who is just sbout to celebrate the 59:h anniversary of his |paper’s founding. Mr. Lawson was born jin Scotland, but came to Nova Scotia when /& boy and settled in Pictou, the great coal miniog centre of the province. In 1833, at the age of 19, he found himself ia Yar- ‘nm Oath, since then become famous as one of the greatest shipping ports of the world, and while waiting was induced by some of /the public-spirited Yarmouthians to remain }and start another paper. This he did, \issuing the first number of the Herald, wich the aid of Richard Huntington, on j Aus. 9, 1833. Since that time, with the exception cf a slight break during the forties, caused by ill-health, Mr. Lawson has maintained his proprietor-ship of the paper, and has edited nearly every line that has been published in it during that long period. It is a remarkable fact, also, that there are living in Yarmouth today three men who have taken the paper constantly during the entire 59 years. These are ‘constant readers” surely. Mr. Lawson modestly disclaims any par- ticular credit for what he mvy have done in ; pursuance of his duty as a journalist, bat he hss certainly earned the universal respect of and good will of his townspeople and the people of Nova Scotia at large. He has done much to elevate the tore of journalism in the province, and has the proud satisfaction of knowing that not one paragraph has ever ap- peared in his paper to which the most finical could ob!ect. His career, too, has been con- temperaneous with a great transition period in Nova Scotia’s history, much of which has had an important bearing on the interests of our own country. In 1833, when the Hera'd was started, there were only 10 counties in Nova Scotia, where now there are 18. There were only eight stores on the now bustling Main street of Yarmouth, and there was not a single church bell or church organ in the place. There was no steam communication either by land or water, and only weekly stage com- munication with the outside world. There was not even a lighthouse at that part of the coast! Indeed, there were only two short rsilroads in the United States then—one in New York and the other in South Carolina. All the prominent Yarmouth business men of that day have died, and a new generation and life have sprung up. Yarmouth was not a free port in those days, aed all custom ap- pointments were made in England. In fact, the people of the province were allowed to do hardly anything themselves, except think. Lady Henry Somerset has just completed arrangements for starting a new woman's paper, to be called the White Ribbon, She herself will act as editor in-chief, but will have the assistance of an experienced journal- ist. The aim of the new per iodical will be to deal with women’s work in every form, at home and abread, and with such outside topics as temperance, the hours of labor, and thrift, in their relation to the weaker sex. The capital of the new venture is to be £10,- 000, says the London correspondent of the Birmingham Post, and there are already ample signs that it will be raised with ease. The Duchess ot Bedford, Lady Carlisle, Miss Francis Willard, Mrs. Hannah Whitall Smith aud other well-known workers in this cause are actively interested in the movement.— English Paper. A sad blow has fallen upon the English Presbyterian mission in Formosa, through the sudden removal of one of its most promising medical missionaries, Dr. Gavin Russell, in- telligence of whose early death has just been receined by telegraph. Dr. Russell was sent out to Formosa only four years ago, atthe expense of the late Rev. W. R. Barbour, M. A, Bonskeid. Mr. Barbour felt 80 _— interested in Dr. Russell’s work that he be- queathed the sum of £10,000 to perpetuate it, the interest to go to Dr. Russell’s support, and after him to any successoc who might be appointed to the same field. The Pinker:on Detective Agency has been brought into such notoriety of late by the Homestead troubles that particulars of the formation and work of that now famous service are of interest. It was organized in 1850 by the late Allan Pinkerton in Chicago, as a body of private police or watchmen. Railways, mining and coal companies, iron works, and all sorts of corporations engaged its services. The Pinkerton Police Patrol and the National Detective Agency are under the same contro}, and practically form one great organization, The former has for years furnished the chief police protection for Manhaitan Beach, Ooney Island, the IUinois State Fair, and many great race courses, parks, etc. Its objects are, of course, intended to work for the welfare of pruprieturs and capitalists, and, in carrying out these aims, it frequent!y comes into collision with organized labor in various shapes. Hence the bitter feeling aroused amongst working- men, especially by the recent publication of a Pinkerton circular outlining the aims and history of the association, which was sent not long since to all the large concerns in the United States. ‘The followihg ex- tract will afford a clear insight into the principles of the organization : “Atthis time, when there is so much dis- satisfaction among the labering classes and secret labor societies are organizing throngh- out the United States, we suggest whether it would not be well for railroad companies and other corporations, as well as individuals who are extensive employers of labor, to keep a close watch for designing men among their own employees, who, in the interest of secret labor societies, are inducing their employees to join these organizations and eventually to cause a strike. i: is frequently the case that by taking a matter of this kind in hand in time and aiscovering the ringleaders and deal- ing promptly with them, serious trouble may be avoided in the future.” Corporations aud individuals, desirous of ascertaining the feelings of their employes, and whether they are likely to engage in strikes, or are members of secret Inbor societies, are advised in this document to obtain the services of Pinkerton’s detec- tives. It can easily be imagined, therefure, how bitter would be the hostility between such a body and the laborers whom it was used to crush or coerce. And we can hard- ly wonder, whilst deeply regretting their cruelty of action, that the strikers at Homestead should have allowed their bit- terness of feeling to get the better of their manliness and common sense. But,j in the opinion of the Empire, the law will probably intervene, as is now being deraanded, and declare such an organiza- tion illegal. Of course the employers have a right to look after their interests as well as the workingmen, but they certainly should not be allowed to use private bodies of armed detectives to control and watch their employes, and it is a wonder, with all the boasted freedom of American institn- tions, that such a practice has been so long tolerated there. in Canada or any other country under British laws, the attempt to use a private armed force outside oi the regular authorities would at once be put down with a high hand.
