Iartakcn 0d a must enjoyable banquet served by the ladies of the Sllmmerslge Branch of the Red Cross Society, Mr. Hopkins called upon the guest speaker who reminded his aud- ience that it was not necessary to dwell on the outstanding services rendered by the Red Cross during the war years, the saving at lives both in the armed services and among civilians. This splendid record need not be indicated, the proud record oi the Society ‘is familiar to all. Mr. Campbell bald the workers that one of the diffi- cillu" they will meet. one of the arguments they will have to con- tend with, is that thc war is over, that people are tired oi the large number 0i appeals made upon the public. He reminded all that the work of the Red Cross did not end with the end oi the war, but is continued into peacetime and while the amount of money rc- qulred is not so great their work must continue to go on, such as the continued care oi disabled vet- erans, the aitermath oi war. All are familiar, he continued, -with the great number of lives saved by blood transfusions and the Society has undertaken to continue this great work on even a larger scale and now the objective is that these transfusions be made iree to all. Other lilies oi activity such as Red Cross outpost hospitals, treatment of crippled children, and disastertreliei were mentioned by the speaker. \\.m closed with the assurance oi his belief that the local objective would mcet with a generous response from the public. His Worship Mayor J. F. Arnetl reicrred to the splendid work oi the local Branch of the Red Cross, which kept up its activities even though the war has ended. Mayor Arnett said he ieit assured that tile local objective would not only be met but as in fornler years oversubscribed. _ Mr. Hugh Morrison, chairman oi the special names committee gave a most encouraging report oi the work of his.committee and stated that up to the present seven men have collected $1.154. Mr. Mor- rison moved a hearty vote oi thanks, which was seconded by Mr William Currie, to the ladies, or the Red Cross for the very excel lent supper. New Annan Shocked By Sudden Death The community of New Annan and surrounding districts was deeply shocked to learn of the sudden passing Sunday at his home of one of its most highly respected citizens, Mr. J.
