Three weeks before his mur- der his Nationalist party never seemed more solid. Then sud- denly there were signs of a deep rift between the more moderate Nationalists of the Cape and*the\extremist right- wing groups in the north. No matter how deep this rift, Ver- woerd had the power and moral authority to keep his party u®-ited indefinitely. When he cracked. the whip, all obeyed. His successor as prime min- ister_will not have nearly the same strong hold on the situa- tion and it now seems likely that the long-awaited split in the Nationalist ranks ‘will come into the open at last. The result could be new and deeply -significant moves in South African politics, FERMENT IN PARTY . The rethinking was already in progress before the assassi- nation. There was a ferment in the Nationalist party which was generating a lot of emo- tion, with well-defined factions in the Transvaal and the Cape jostling for* positions of influ- ence. The began after the massive Nationalist victory at the last generai{election and it became ‘more intense after the easing of international pressures following the favor- able judgment in the South- West Africa case. ; The conflict was forced into the open only two weeks ago when the Nationalist newspa-. pers of the Cape launched a bitter attack on a right-wing journal called the South Afri- can Observer which in a se- ries of articles questioned the loyalty of a number of promi- nent Cape Nationalists known for their moderate views. The journal was conducting a kind of McCarthy inquiry of its own. re This clash however was only the top of the iceberg. It be- when the fact leaked out ‘that Assassin Of Prime Minister Had Grudge Against Society sponsors of the journal were a right-wing group. of Na- tionalist parliamentarians led by the minister of posts. and telegraphs, Dr. Albert Hert- zog. This meant that the rift ‘was not only among the rank cabinet level. LONG STRUGGLE LIKELY One of the main ‘differences between the two - groups. is over racial policy and concerr that too much energy is being devoted to petty apartheid (such as not allowing a white football team ‘to tour Japan) and not enough to the larger and more moral concept of separate freedom for the var- ious races. Each faction has been busy preparing its own leader—a man who best represents its idea of a successor to Dr. Verwoerd. His disappearance from the scene--has -come~.so- suddenly however, that neither side is sufficiently prepared for 2 ‘trial of strength. Thus the new _prime minister might well be a stop-gap leader who will keep the ship on course while the struggle for Verwoerd’s real successor intensifies be- hind the scenes and eventu- ally grows into a_ full-scale clash. on That clash might come to think. When it*‘does there will be a. new regrouping among the various politica)’ parties which will draw even the opposition parties into the vortex and_eventually see the beginning of a. new deal in South Africa. : SAILORS COMPETE Norwegian ; merchant seamen two years, in sports ranging from soccer and weightlifting to chess and swimming. came much more significant. | MOTOR REWINDING a a Uh Storey Electric Ltd. 136 Prince St..
