The ranks of outstanding Island athletes are more depleted than ever but the young- sters that have been left are carrying on and although mport is on a low scale nevertheless the contests indulged in ‘have provided the sports fans with many stirring compet- PORTING NE There were no outstanding feats in Island sports this season; no Maritime titles came this way but the boys per- forming gave all they had and no more could be asked. A feat worthy of mention and one that will be hard to beat was “Buck” Whitlock’s scoring of eleven goals in two play- off games in last season's hockey. “Buck” still eligible of Junior ranks, shone brightly all year in local hockey circles but he too. like so many of his fellow athletes is now serving- with the R.C.N. and making as good a job of that as he did over the ice lanes. What prospects there is for 1944 is hard to determine as yet. But the appointment of S. F. Doyle (Sammy) by the government to organize and get athletics moving along at a faster clip augurs well for the future. Sam brings a wealth of knowlege to his job. And to one and all, and particularly to our Island athletes now serving their King and Country, we take this opportunity of wishing you, happiness, prosperity and VICTORY during 1944. - Following is a brief account ofl she various branches of sports‘ luring the year. l SENIOR.
