What Most People Mean by Love is Only a
Feeble Imitation, but Perhapsit is the Best of
Which They 'are Capable; Not Every One is
Endowed With a Gift for Loving Any
More Than a Singing Voice.
I have received an interesting letter from a man who writes: "Most or
you advice of problem of the heart and home is predicted on the assump-
tion that there is such a. thing as permanent love between one man and one
woman. This is a lovely sentiment tltt originated
with the poets, but why continue the fiction that
there is such a thing as lasting love?
"Isn‘t it true that every time a person falls in love
he imagines that it is the first time love was ever
real, and is profoundly certain that it will last for-
ever? Those are the twin characteristics of the love
.nsanlty. Every man and woman usually passes
through a series of these attacks, and when one of
them comes on at a. time when there is sudicient
money it culminates in marriage.
"Then ln a. year or two the couple recover and
they note with surprise and consternation that they
ure married. Nature has played her trick and the law has sealed it,
so there they are, and they might get along fairly well except that presently
they experience another attack and fall for some one else. '
"And what's the harm? As far as I can see this old notion about there
ir
being anything wrong in a man's being _unfaithful to his wife, or a. woman
untrue to her husband, was cut from the same piece of cloth as long sk ts
were made of."
To which I might retort that, after all, there is something to be said for
long skirts, physically and morally. They may be a. ‘bit lbunglesome and
cramp the style of those who long to be free and untrammeled in their
movements, but they we:e warmer and made of better material and lasted
longer than the hal! yard of chiffon out of which knee-length skirts are
made. _

But, brother, one can be too cynical as well as foo trusting. It` ls just as
foolish to have no faith l.n the higher nature ofyour fellow creatures as it is
to be a silly Pollyanno. going around proclaiming that everybody is an angel
in an angelic world. Furthermore. when foil say ther_e can be no permanent
love between a man and a woman you are ,lust as far from the truth es you
would be if you contended that every case of cal! love is the grand passion.
In the face of the divorce statistics I will not dispute your assertion that
most people. who think they are in love diainose their symptoms incorrectly
and mistake a slight rise'in temperature as an indication that they have
chronic inflammation of the heart. _
But that isn't love. lt is merely sex attraction and when that is over they
do, indeed, wake up from their little dream of romance and wonder what
ever made them think they cared for each other, and why they ever married.
And then, if they acknowledge nc law above their own inclinations, they
begin looking _about lor fresh partners who can impart a new thrill to it with
whom to play the love game.
Perhaps these little passing loves, this flash of tinsel in a. tlnpan that
flares up for a. minute and then dies down into a pinch of ashes, are all of
which the great majority of people are capable. Perhaps most men and
_women are too small of heart and brain, too selfish, too self-centered, wo
lacking in loyalty, too incapable of self-abnegation ever to experience a great
love. Not every one is endowed by Nature with a gift for loving any more
than he or she is with I. talent for writing, or painting, or with I. tenor voice.
But for all of that, there are great lovers, men and women whose hearts
cleave to each other and whose aflcctlon ls as endui$l as the eternal rocks..
I know many couples like this. who have been niarried thirty, forty, fifty-
one couple has been married over sixty-years, and they are far more devoted
to each other, far more necessary to etc!! `E5!it'r's happiness today than they
were on their wedding day. _
And why shouldnt this be the case? The cord that binds a man and
woman together is woven of many strands. True, through it must run the
red thread of passion, but if that is the only thing that holds them wgetlior,
it will break. The tie thacblnds them so inextricably Uogether that they are
literally one, is made up of the memories that may have shared together, of
have bent over and the coflins they have wept over together.
It is made up of a. knowledge of a devotion that has never wavered, of I.
million sacrifices that have been made, of a million hardships endured, of
the certainty that in the world there is one human being who will never for-
sake you, no matter what happens, and on whose love you can rely as you
today, and another tomorrow, can have this quality. .
