The interest of Southport and all who | live or whe may hereafter live in the sec- tion of the country westward of the pro posed line of railway. Moreover, the bridge, if placed between Mutch’s Point and Kensington wil) not be one whit more advantageous to the people of Fort Augustus, or any other district of | cvuntry south cf the Hillsborough, than it | at the head of the railway wharf,as pro- posed. From every public point of view the importance of having the bridge between Charlottetown and Seuthport is evident. We, therefore, appeal to the authorities to pause before their decision is irrevoc- able, in order tha’ a survey and estimate of the cost of a bridge between Charlotte:own ani Southport may be made by a compet- ent engineer, A few thousand dollars difference in the cost of constructioa ought not to inflaence the Government of Canada in regard toa question affecting the public convenierce for all time to come. --e+ THE DREY?TUS SCANDAL. Tat condemnation of Captain Dreyfus will satisfy the chiefs of the French arm) and the anti.Semetic party in France. But for a large proportion of ihe people of France—ihe justice-loving portion—and for the world at large its significance is ominus. The Court of Cassation, after a full and careful investigation, decided that Dreyfus had been unjustly cenvicted. The unfortunate officer was, thereupon brought out of bis infernal prison and sub- jected to anew trial. At this trial nothing new was brought out, and all the facts going toshow that he was innocent—the confession and suicide of Col. Henry, the confesri0n of the scoundrel Esterhazy, av well as other points—were re-established. Yet Dreyfus who all the while protests bis innocence has again been eonvicted and eentenced to ten years iwprisonment, while Esterhazy, the self-confessed traitor, goes free. This is justice as administered by French army officiale ; and the Republic of #rance is in the bands of these men. France is evidently in a bad way, an? the future full of danger to republican inatitu- tions, $10,812 and $15 isthe price of our tailor made ready-to-wear o’coats. Str,—I would like to know what time the foreign mail closes in the morning at the Charlottetown Post Office. This morning 1 had a letter which I wanted sent particularly. I went to the Post Office at ten minutes past eight thinking of course that I was in lots oftime. Qn banding my letierto the Post Office clerk you may im- agine my surprise on being told that the mail was closed and that the clerk who had made it up. hed left the office. I then asked the clerk in the office what time the mail was sup-~ poced to close and he told me ayquarter past eight. It was then just ten minutes past eight, and the mail courier was taking the bags cut of the office to thetrain; aud the train goes at a quarter to nine.
