BuS-i‘neéso‘i‘iite "could-get 0f At the Beginning of the meeting several senators expressed concern about the recent action of the R.C.M:P. on campus regarding drug searches. It was ex- pressed by Professor Andrew Robb that the R.C.M.P. were.not very courteous in theiilaction,in that they haier cainformed the flpiygrsitynadministration of their actions in par- ticular the chief executive officer. President Baker was out of the province at the time of the searches,. but acting President, Dr. Ken Ozmon had not been in- formed of the R.C.M.P.'s prescence either. The director of security had been informed by the I R.C.M.P. of their action. In the past the general policy has been that the, R.C.M.P. inform the ad- ministration that they were coming, and that they didn't come unless on other grounds they are approach- ed. 1 Micheal Hennessey, the registrar brought to the attention of Senate that New Year's Day being on Saturday, Monday was de- signated a holiday; and {could registration be changed to the 4th and 5th of January, with classes starting on Thursday Jan. 6th, rather that classes. beginning on Wed. Jan. 5th, as previously scheduled in the university calendef. The reason for this being that registration takes two days to be completed. ' Professor Owen Sharkey ex- cused himself but expressed his feelings that the Business office "could get off their/ass", and complete registration in one day rather that two. Several other senators wondered if temp- orarily bOnded employees could be brought in for one day to work with the business office, so that registration could be cbmpleted in one day. 'The matter would be looked into. , The Admissions committee submitted, recommendations before Senate dealing with thegentrance requirements for thgmUniversity of Prince Edward Island. The first recommendation was that students wishing to enter the Arts faculty must have English 11, Math, and four electives. The previous re- quirements were that students must have grade 12 academic Math to enter the to enter the university. The rec— Comendation was defeated. SO.grade 12 Math will still be mandatory to enter all faculties at UPEI. The motion was passed concerning the Science faculty require— ments for english, Math, two sciences plus one elective. The. Moninating com- mittee reported a vacancy for a student to serve on the Budget committee. ’It was moved that Micheal Clow be officially de— signated as student re- presentative on the comr mittee. President of the Student Union, Derek . Key, informs Senate of his withdrawal from the nomin- ating committee: so there ,is a student vacancy on that committee. The Senate library‘committee‘also requires one student rep- resentative. - ‘Jim Griffith, Director of the Student Services re— ported to Senate on the council of university life. The council dealt with committees on re— sidences, the dining hall, orientation, etc. Several recommendations were brought to the floor to be voted upon. One was that the council report to .WUSC handicrafts from developing communities Coming to Marian Hall next week is a sale of ~handcrafts from 'Third World' countries, Caravan, sponsored by World Univer— sity Service of Canada (W.U.S.C.). WUSC is a member of Partners Overseas in Trade and as such aims to improve efficiency by centralized buying of. handcrafts from develop—V ing communities with Athe intention of benifit— ing people who would otherwise be unemployed or underemployed. As a result, small—scale in— dustries can become bet— ‘ter established in de- veloping parts of the world, bringing earnings to people in their own’ localities. Items included in-the sale are : beadwork," the President on their actions rather than the Senate. Another recom- mendation was that committees structure be accepted as outlined. The standing committees would include the S.J.C. formerly a Student Union Committee, the parking and traffic committee and nominating committee both former com- mittees under senate jur— isdiction, residences, orientation, and dining hall. Since several senators did not have a report on the council of university life, and also that it was getting, \ late, and many Senators were leaving, further discussion on the.Council on UniverSity Life was tabled. Derek Key's motion was brought to the floor concern— ing residences. It stipulates that students upon apply- ing for residence must sub— mit fifty dollars along with their application, this would acknowledge their sincerity in applying for residence. Previously there The Cadre, November 25, 1976 page 3. {their ass.” has been no application fee. If accepted into residence the money would then be put toward the students residence fees. A twenty—five dollar refund would be given back to the student before August 15th when apply— ing in the first semester for residence. This is only in the case that a student does not wish to live in re- sidence at the university; Senate felt that Key's motion was not in their jurisdiction, but would be presented to the Board of Governors. Senator Gary Webster expressed his feelings that under no circumstances should ~Senate meetings be cancelled due to the Chairman and Vice-chairman being out of the Province. The motion was passed that the Senior Dean should act as chair- man of Senate if this problem should ever arise again. The Senate will meet again at 3 p.m. in the Board Room of Kelly Building on Thursday December the Second.
