Tnn i. m. Yshlrd of a. series of articles by a famous Canadian Writer on the Eldorado mine and Canada's part in the development of atomic power. By LESLIE McFARLANE Port Radium, out 0st of the atom, is _no frigi settle- ment struggllng to survive in g land of perpetual snow and ma. Many towns and cities elsewhere in Canada endure weather quite as cold. The average mean temperature of the Mackenzie Valley, in fact, 15 about equal to that of Port Althur. It seems a good deal meaner at Port Radium be- cause the winters are longer. In the winter of 1944-45, the lowest temperature re- corded at the R.C.G.S. station at the mine was 39 below zero F. In July of this year the mercury climbed to 79 degrees. In the depths of the mine the temperature stays between 32 and 40 degrees the year round. Food supplies for the entire camp are kept in a storage vault hewn out of the rock in the mine. The Arctic winds that sweep across Great Bear Lake in the darkness of the winter months are bitter. And be- cause freeze-up comes early in October, with break-up in late June, the ice on Great Bear freezes to a. depth of six feet. Dig two or three feet under the muskeg of the Bar- rens and you'll strike ice the year round. The enemy of Port Radium is not cold weather but dist- ance. Distance reflected in the high cost of every article brought in from Edmonton 1,000 miles away, with air freight at 55 cents a pound. Water transportation is cheaper at $100 a ton now as against $400 a ton in the early days of the mine. ' The families living at Port Radium stock up with cases of canned goods and staples brought in by boat during the short summer. Occasion- ally they order other supplies by air express but most of the routine food purchases are made at the Eldorado cook-house. The mine com- missary is the local depart- ment store, where clothing is sold at cost and tobacco and chocolate bars sell at Ed- monton prices. The commis- sary shows a profit of about $200 a month. This money goes into s. recreation fund. It helped pay for the billiard tables in the community hail, for the books in the library, the projection machine and the movies that are shown every Friday availing, for the bowling alleys now being in- stalled, and for the curling rink being built this winter. The De will merely ar- rive by the cloc . At Easier the women of Port Radium hold their own version of an Easter parade.
