Work or Tue Specrroscors.*— In _ his recent address 43 President of the British Association” for the Advancement of Science, Dr. Wm. Huggins said that it is now sume thirty years siace the spectro- scope gave us for the first time certain knowledge of the nature of the heavenly bodies, and revealed the fundamental fact that terrestrial matter is uot peculiar to the solar system, but is commun to all the stars visible to us. This instrument has in this time analyzed the stars, though it has thus far failed to interpret the remarkub‘e spec trum of the Aurora Borealis, and to teach much of the physical and chemical nature of the sun’s corona. It has shown reasons for arranging the stars in a series in which the different temperatures seem to be in- dicated and to denote different stages of evolution, our sun occupying a place near the middle of the series. It has given us a means of determining that some stars are approaching and some receding in the line of sight, and of measuring the rate, though the nearest star is s0 remote that its ap- proach at the rate of 100 miles per second would not increase its light one-fortieth in a century. The motions of abvut fifty stars have been thus determined with an accuracy of about an English mile per second. Iudeed, a num- ber of measures of the star Arcturus have been made by Keeler with a variation of not more than s:x-tenths of a mile a second, » these being determinations of the motioa of a remote sun by means of light-waves which have been nearly two hundred years upon their journey. Nebule have been seen to move at about the same rate as the stars—from two to twenty-seven miles per second, and in one case nearly forty miles. Photography, which has rendered wonder- has been called to the serious diminution of birds in France through destruction of the nests. Some insectivorons species are be- coming very rare, while plant parasites are increasing. Cats and boys are the chief destroyers, and it is saggested that the boys be punished by law, that the keeping of cats be made illegal], and that prizes be offered for killing animala that prey on eggs. TeMPERATURE Extkemes.—In Werchu jansk, East Siberia, the coldest place known on earth, the temperature ranges in January from 24° to 80° below zero, and in July from from 40° to 86° above, the mean for December, January and February being 55° below zero. The climatic con- ditions, says Dr. W. J. Van Bebber, are very high atmospheric pressure in winter, with calm air and a_ clear sky—conditions which favor radiation, A search for the hottest region shows that the bel! of highest temperature passes through southeastern Asia, the interior of north Af- rica, Arizona, and the centre of Australia. The characteristic climatic feature of this tropic belt is a high and equable temper- ature with dense humidity of the atmos- phere. The highest annual mean temper- ature known is on the southern coast of the Red Sea, The range of the mean tem- perature at Massowah is from 78° to 79° in January and February to 95° to 96° in July and August, with an annual mean of 86> and a daily variation of 10°. to 12°. These figures do not appear excessive. The highest mean temperature is occasionally ex- ceeded in other regions, but the coutinu- ous, nearly uniform high temperature renders it almost uaendurable for Euro- peans, Cuearer Qvrinint —The new artificial quinine, produced by Messrs. Grimaux and Arnaud, of Paris, is mentioned as one of the great discoveries of the year. It is ob- tained by treating the base cuprein of a Brazilian shrub with sodium, then treating the resulting compound with chloride of methyl. The product is quinine absolutely identical with the substance inat has be- come so familiar and so indispensable. E.ecrroeMacnetic Discovertes.—In the progress of electro-magnetic science, according to Prof. A. E. Kennelly, these facts seem to have been fully established: 1. Thegreatachieve- ment since Faraday’s time has been the determination that all electricity flows, or tends to, in closed curves or circuits, so that we have the electrostatic circuit, the galvanic cireuit, and the magnetic circuit, each re- sembling, as it were, an endless chain or a bundie of endless chains; and the lawa which control these three different types of circuit show wonderful analogies. 2 The due appreciation of the influence of the ether and its importance in all electro-magnetic phen omena. While originally the electrical activity seemed to be confined to the battery or conduct- ing wires of a galvanic circuit, it is now believed that the ether surrounding these conductors plays fully as active a part in the process of conduction aud the mind sees free space no longer void, but filled with an active and responsive substance—the ether. It looks almost as if matter were inert in comparison with the ether. 3. The evidence in favor of the proposition that light is a vibratory disturbance in the ether of an electro-magnetic character is such as almost to amount to demonstration. When this shall be generally accepted, the whole domsin of optics and 1adient energy will be enrolled as one depart- ment and property of electro-magnetic physics. Evectric Saw Reparrine.—A considerable saving in repairing saws is to be credited to the new process of electric welding. It was ‘formerly necessary to cut down to a smaller size any saw from which a tooth had been broken, but itis now only necessary to fit in a new tooth and secure it in place by electric welding. A drop of oil restores the temper. The joint in contiauous band saws is also made by this process. In Oldenburg, a fall of temperature from night. embarking. JOHN SNELGROVE, BOATS T0 HIRE! THE REMARKABLE POWERS OF A PRETTY KENTUCKY GIRL. Alice Sunderland is an unusually pretty country girl residing with her father on a farm several miles from Greenup, Ky. The girl is well educated, and has been a wonder to her friends for several years. She speaks to animals in an unknown tongue and they obey her implicitly, even against the commands and blows of their owners. She also foretells hours ahead, just where and how many animals will be — at certain spots and what they will 0 Saturday she gave a public test of her power. She said five yoke of oxen would be found on Spalding Hill at a certain house. She described minutely what the animals and driver would do at her ap- proach. It came about as she predicted She then described a pasture some dis. tree were seven cows, which would ap- proach when she came in sight and all give down their milk without being touched. The fluid came out in streams, but no one touched them. At her commana they re- turned to their grazing. Many other won- derful things are told of her. News Notes. Count Sweinitz, commander of the Ger- man expedition into East Africa, was seriously wounded in an attack on Quin- koso. The revolt of natives against the Germans is still spreading. During the recent British elections the votes polled in the London constituencies were 397,000, of which the Unionists ob- tained 211,547, and the Gladstonians 185,- a total Unionist vote of $228,933 and a total Giladstonian vote of 191,012. The majority is large, but it must be remember- ed that the Gladstonians were formerly in a he)pless minority in the metrepolis, while they now elect 25 out of 62 members, and poll five-sixths 9s many votes as their op- ponents. ‘Strength of character consists of two things—power of will, and power of self- reatraint. It requires two things therefore for its existe.ce—strong feelings and a strong command over them. Now, we very often mistake strong feelings for strong character. A man who bears all before him, before whose wild burst of fury the children of the house. hold quake, because he has his owa way in all things, we callhim a strong man. The truth is he isa weak man; it is his passions that are staong; h-, mastered by them is weak. You must measure the strength of a man by the power of the feelings he subdues, not by the power of those thai subdue him. And hence composure is the highest result of strength.” The slight increase that has taken place in the population of France during the de- cade between 1881 and 1891, which is now disclosed by the census, is a subdject which is exciting some interest. In 188L France had 37,672,048 inhabitants; in 1891 it had 38,343 192 inhabitants, and incroase of only 672,144 in ten years. In the same period the population of Great Britain and Ireland increased from 35,241,482 to 37,- 888,153, showing a growth of 2,646,671, or about four times as great an increase as that of France. But these figures, surprising as they are, do not show the whole truth. During the decade between 1881 and 1891 the United Kingdom lost by emigration not less than 1,600,000 persons, that being the difference between the number of those wholeft thecountry in that timeand those who came incoit. On the other hand, the emi- gration from France during the same period was quite small, aggregating not more than 300,000 for the 10 years, sv that the natural increase of population in the British Islands was about five times as great as that of France. If Mrs. Dens- more’s statement is correct, it is a very im- rtant one in its bearing upon Mrs May- riek’s chances for pardor, Sir Charles Russell will certainly be a member of Mr. Gladstone’s government, and very likely Home Secretary. If he entertains the con- victions attributed to him by Mrs. Densmore, he can hardly avoid recommending to the Q2een the pardon of the unfortunate prisoner. ——~.>—_—— To cain the public confidence is essential to business success, and it can only be gained by a steady course of faithful dealing with them. It is by this course that Messrs. Tuckett & Son have secured the great success ot their ‘‘Myrtle Navy” tobacco. This con- fidence is not only a source of business tu the firm, but also a source of economy which the consumers get the benefit of. The merchant never loses a moment of time in examining the quality of the tobacco. The name fixes the quality as absolutely as the mint stamp fixes the value of the guinea, It is not even necessary for the commercial traveller’s trunk to be burdened with a sample of “Myrtle Navy.” All his customers know what it is, and know ia an instant when it has been supplied. There is no room for any dispute ahout it. No waste of time or postage in writing complaints about it.
