The Snelling of the F a nd the Grand Processional of 40,000 Troops as They Matched Past Lord Roberts. I MAJOR W. A. WEEKS. Srnmos, Hirnssuac Disrnicr, TRAKSVAAL, June 14, 1900. heard from you, and it seems like a year. I left Bloeinfontein on Saturday afternoon at4 p. m. May 19th, in company with two other Canadian officers to join the Regi- ment which was somewhere at the front in the direct'on of Johannesburg. We took the train as far as a. place called Smalldeel where we arrived Bt 7 a. m. next morning. It was a most uncom~ fortable night for besides the three Cana# dian officers there were four others of different rcgiments bound on the same errand as ourselves and the seven of ns were packed in a. small van; so that we could not lie down and had to stand, sit or wedge ourselves into any uncomfort- able position we could devise. _After arriving at Sinalldeel,a .small sta- tion,we had to get out as this train went no farther. We managed to get a cup of coffee and some bread and butter in a Dutch house near by, this with some canned meat and a pot of jam wh ich we carried with us, made a nice b.eakfast. After waiting a few hours a. construc- tion train camefalong. There were no Pull- man cars on this train. We howe ver,got a comfortable berth on a flat car loaded with sleepers and Kafiirs. These Negroes were going forward to assist in repairing the railroad which had been greatly des- troyed by the retreating enemy. We placed a. couple of sleepers across the car so as t0 separate ourselves from the _Nig- gers. We started at 10 a. ni. and arrived at Sand river, then the Railhead, at 3 p.m. same day. ` » We had a pleasant ride as the day was beautifully fine and the scenery not at all too bad. At Sand River the large railway bridge had been blown up, and the train could proceed no further. ‘ This bridge, constructed of iron, rested on three large stone pillars about S0 or 100 eet high. The centre one was blown to ieces and the large iron bridge fell into the river. We were just in time to catch a large convoy of provisions proceeding North, and e - 4 - One of the most danger. ous and repulsive forms of oooosv for which Dodd‘s Kidney i Pilh are the only certain Kgxrliadbathe water, _whtihch _ expelled' in_ e _ _ form uriueulowsi back and lodges in`~the cella_ of I the desh and pufs out the if slckiinh lllemoveththe filth w c nga u e draxn.' We hai* great trouble in crossing the drift or ford as the banks were very steep and sandy. Next day the 21st, we started o€f`a.t 4 ri.. m. without any breakfast and marched for four hours. We could not ride on the waggons as they were :.00 heavily loaded. We arrived about 8 a. in. at a place called Riet Spruit and remained till 4.30 p. m. during which time the oxen were allowed to graze. Although the n0h°u5e§ ill'SlRht, nothing but the never lldillg veldt. We had a good rest here also breakfast and dinner. and then pro- ceeded on to Ventersberg. As th.; mad ran close to the railway track, we 'Wlllked along' the latter, which _was much easier than the rough veldt. A section foreman with a construction party passed us, (three Canadians) on a trollv going North to repair broken culverts, ete. This foreman recognized us as Canadians and called out ito us to call in at a cottage on the roadside when we arrived opposite it. We did so and found a roaring fire in an old fashioned Hre- place surrounded by three men. On the tire was a large pot of hot coffee. The foreman,a Canadian named Taylor, from Fort McLeod, was very kind to us and wg remained there for about ten minutes, d\11'il18 which time we got outside of -two tins of hot cotfeee each and felt; mug h refreshed, for it was a cold night and very dark. __ _ ~ f We then hurried' on and arrired at Ventersberg Station about 9 p. m. In the waiting room of thesta im there wasafire of coal in the grate. On this Breithe sta.- tion master, Connolly, by name, gave us permission to cook our supper. We soon had the water boiling and hot tea made with a. tin of potted tongue and some biscuits, butter and jam.
