Jason Derry Dear Editor, It has been very inter- esting to listen to the argue- ments for and against free trade. Both sides have their opinions, which are perfectly justified when they are hased on facts. However, one of the pamphlets against free dis- trade concentrates on torting the truth. Free trade has very heavy cover- age in the it is strange that the Pro- Canada Network expects to be able to lie us. For example, brewing is totally exwmpt from free trade but in news media, so to Pro-Canada claims it 1s danger from the agreement. Canada and the USA are both major grain producers so the Americans do not buy Canadian grains except for small amounts of canola. Yet Pro-Canada claims that the Wheat Boards are in danger when they do not even sell to the Americans. Free trade is between Canada and the USA, not the USSR. In any debate, each side should present the facts that support but the pamphlet “Brian Mulroney's Secret Trade Deal Could Cost Your Job And Our Country,” lies to its arguements throughout. That is plainly stupid, when there are many valid arguem- its case, support nets against free trade that are based on the truth. Another arguement that bothers me is people arguing about what the Americans want. Who cares what they want ~ what matters is what The ban is in the agreement. to our marketting boards for eggs and milk, but the agree- ment exempts them. Americans wanted Since this is the case, why is the ar- guement continually dragged up? There are substantial is- sues to worry about! The real problem is that so many people are not even interested in the facts. and opinions of the opposite isde. I support free trade. When I tell certain peo- ple that, I am accused of loving America more than Canada and having no _in- terest in Canadian culture. Well, don’t tell me what I be- lieve in and I won't tell you what you believe in. Canada is more than an economic agreement (just my personal opinion). Last week the Gem had a Pro-Canada Network ar- ticle called “Prot Fes Deal Will Bring Standardized Ed- ucation.”” Read the article it’s entertaining. Basically, here is the seqence of logic used without the details: It’s basd on the fact that: Canadi- ans will be allowed to work in the US, if the deal goes through. 1. Canadian profession- will work the USA which means als in 2. There will be common - job qualifications, therefore 3. There standardized education sys- will be a tem between Canada and the USA, thus 4. The countries share common trade unions and crime rates, so 5. We face the Amer- icaniztion of Canada’s stan- dards I fail to see how any of these points logically lead to but as usual will and culture. the next one, they are all lies anyway. 1. Many Canadian pro- fessionals, including doctors and nurses, already work | in the USA with practically ‘no immagration restrictions. Despite this, there is no plan to standardize medical qual- ifications. 2. Architects (the ex- ample used by Pro-Canada) must pass an examination in the province that they have a licence in. The PEI Ar- chitects Association has ju- risdiction here. 3. Canada does not have a standardized educa- tion. For instance, Ontar- ion has Grade 13 for high school students before they can enter university. How could we possibly standard- ize with Americans when we have no intention of dardizing among provinces? stan- 4. The Auto Pact has given us free trade in autos since 1964, but the Canadian Auto Workers has recently split from the United [Amer- ican] Auto Workers. What’s move, PEI has a different crime rate than Ontario, and I like to believe that we have free trade within Canada. There are many science major people for and against free trade who know more about it than I do. “Free Trade Will Hurt Women Most” is an honest anti-free trade ar- ticle. However, I do not like being lied to. Robert McNeil DEAR JIM & TAMMY DEAR J & T; As a freshman in PSY- CHOLOGY here at UPEI I am finding that in all the Psychology classes there is a majority of females. While I am a normal, healthy male, I find that it is very hard to lis- ten and concentrate in class. Is there anything that I can do to improve my cocentra- tion but still take the same classes? DUMBFOUNDED DEAR DUMBFOUNDED: Your best bet is to pray every day before class and ask for the strength you re- quire to listen. If this does - not work than the only other thing that you could possi- ble do is to get a girlfriend and concentrate on her be- _fore classes and you will be to TIRED to do ANYTHING BUT listen in class. DEAR J & T: 5 I'm a physics major here at UPEI and am a senior. I was wondering if you could help me figure ont why I came back 777? BEWILDERED DEAR BEWILDERED: You being back maybe due to the fact that you are a science student and in your last year which shows that you are full of commitment, dedication to yourself, and that you have self-esteem. Pm CARLA REPLIES Dear Mr. Jordan, I am so glad that you have found my double-edged fallacies. However problem- atic my letter may be to you, I have no intentions of mak- ing it PHILOSOPHICALLY SOUND. However, I will rephrase my reference to Ms. Man- derson’s “blatant” attack on the security guard to “sub- tle” attack on the security guard. Mr. Jordan, beyond this concession I cannot go - for I found Ms. Mander- son’s comment “bored look- ing” far from “trivial and ir- relevant”! As to my anonymousness -— I like Carla with a K!
