to sell us their products, all because
we lack the pluck and enterprise to
start and maintain factories of our
own.
The Guardian has frequently, as
our readers know, called attention?-o
this important subject. We are glad
now to he able to enforce the lesson
with the weighty words of Dr. Roh-
ertson, who perhaps more than guy
other man in Canada has the ear of
the people of P-rince Edward Island.
We deplore the continued exodus of
our young men »-and women. The
cause is to be mainly found in the
want ot constant, payinz and varied
industry at home.` Nothing but in-
dustrial development can supply that
want or check the continued exodus.
'Phe proof of this is found in the tens
of thousands of Island-born people
emp’toyed in the factories of New
England. -
We cannot expect all _our young peo-
ple to remain content to work upon
the farm or in catching fish. The
business of cierking and all the pro-
fessions are full. In any case their
varied talents demand varied callings,
s field for their mechanical skill, a
chance to learn the varied handi-
crafts, to make ready money and to
rise to Positions of trust and control.
All such chances are now deniedlt-hem
at home and will be denied until we
create factories of our own.
There is some unfavorable com-
ment in regard to the selection, or
more particularly the omissions,
made of witnehsea to give testimony
before the Royal Commission at its
recent meeting here. -Very properly
the important industry of Bruce
Stewart & Co. was represented along
with the railway workshops. And,
as elsewhere stated, our industries
are all too few. But we haveacon-
densed milk factory, i a to-
bacco factory, a soap factory,
a boot and shoe factory,~ a_tannery
and our merchant tailors collectively
employ a large number of hands, to
say nothing of the dairying and lob-
ster industries which are of very
large importance and seem not to
have been touched hy the inquiry at
all. »
“Take ball cartridges, an-d do not
hesitate to use them,” was the order
givcn by the Spanish Government to
the troops sent to San Sebastian on
Sunday last to preserve order. 'Phe
order that was to he preserved meant
the prevention of a demonstration
which Spanish Roman Catholics were
about to make against the Cannlejns
Government. We fail to see why
these people should not be permitted
to make R peaceful demonstration of
their opinions, whether those opin-
ions are right or wrong. Evidently
the Spanish Premier, while posing as
the friend of religious equality,. h-as
_thc spirit of intolerance and is bar
baric enough to treat opposition to
his Government as a capital crime.

A New York statlaticlan has deval-
oped a Plan to awe consumers some
millions of dollars every year. After
tbe manner of other' reformers he
proceeds ,to demonstrate bow we are
being ruined in order that it may be
made clear bow we can be saved
from ruin. Our ruin is being wrought
by the odd half cent. For instance,
we ‘buy three articles at 12l cents
each, the total beihg 37{ cents and
the seller makes ua pay 38 ccnti. In
this he gains and we lose the half
cent. It is estimated that the aver-
_age family loses in this way half a
cent ten times every week, or $2.60
in the year. Perhaps the loss occurs
twenty .times a week on an average,
in which case the loss would he $510
a year. There are a million and a
half of families in Canada, and their
loss in this way is anywhere from
$3,900,000 to $7,800,000 a year. The
simple remedy for this ruinous con-
dition- is .to have the Government is-
sue a ZA cent coin. 'Phan we can ZW!!
exact change and save all these mll-
lions. ,

long trip to the South Atlantic and
Indian oceans. The fleet this year

Scotia schooner Isabel May, built
for A.J. Betchell, of Victoria, B.(‘».
