Not only are. there laws governing svt‘ry aspect of civil. moral and spiritual behavior. but also laws with respect to mercy and kindness towards the un- fortunate. the poor and widows. Two verses from Leviticus and a passage from Ruth de-r fine the laws of harvest and provide us with an example of their application. Neither assigned to our lesson. but they are worth discussing briefly. Iii Igviticus 19.9 and 10. God commands the Israelites to leave the corners of the fields unreaped and the fallen fruit of the vineyard on the ground for the poor and the_ transients. This is because the lands the Israelite tilts are not his own. They are Gods and God in- tends a portion of every acre to be reserved for the poor. Ruth 2. 1-18. shows us the law is applied. The faith which makes a loud profession, but never manifests itself in good works, is worthless. It is only natural that we should find many references to Gods love for us. our love for Him and for others in the Epistle of John. But in passage assigned to today's lesson. John backs up his idyl- lic teachings with the very practical appraoch of James. Christians should love one another. This is a primary re- quisite for eternal life. The per- ect example of this love is p 3' O in Jesus‘ laying down His life for us.
