I for ore will not. Linenat, Pownal, July 14, 1897. CONSISTENCY—A JEWEL. Dear Sia,—-It is ludicrous to see the replies made by the bon. member for Squaw Bay to the questions put by the Guardian to the candidates on the temper ance question, which appear in this morn- ing’s issue of that journal. How ful! that gentleman is of temperance and morality, just now! How consistent his present stand with tegard to the temperance cause is with his record as amember of the Charlottetown Club! How ridiculens for an hon. member who makes use of the club when canvassing his constituents, numbers whom of he invites in to refresh themselves, to now come forward and pose as an advocate of the most stringent tewperance measures that can be introduced in the Legisiature ! Does any man of such calibre imagine for a moment that the people are to be duped by his hypocritical professions ? If he has euch an idea in his mind it would be wise Let him reali views on the question. Then he will at least win some little modicum of respect for candor and honesty. Scorr Act. eR ESTEEMED EXCHANGES. Montreal Gazette: Some papers, which are anticipating a cool reception of Sir Wilfred Laurier in Paris, do not consider all the circumstances. Sir Wilfred speaks French as well as he does English. He can say a8 nice things in one tongue as in the other, and he will say them. When he is through the Parisians will be as pleased us bave been the Londoners, and with as much reason. St Jeuhn Suan: That stalwart liberal paper the Montreal Witness, has not a very high opinion of Mr. Blair and Mr. Tarte. Ia denying the storv that Sir Oliver Mowat and Sir Richard Cart- wright are to leave the cabinet, it says: ‘Jt is sometimes indeed very neceasary to have both Sir Oliver and Sir Rehard come forward and say they have looked into thingsand theyare all right. Wuith- out these assurances it would be very difficult to suppose some things to be all right.” —Halifax Herald: —Besides the crivie:sm of the government reprinted elsewhere in this issue from the Simcoe Reformer, there are now appearing from Gay to day sharp condemnations of the administra- tion in papers that have supported the Grit party throughout their entire history. The Huntington Gleaner, we quoted a few days ago, in condemnation of the Drammond County railway deal, and the same p3per takes the government severely to task for abandoving their professed programme of economy, and rushing into noprecedented extravagance. The Patron papers also take a similar view of the Government's faithlessness in the matter of economy; the and altogether it may safely be said that no government ever broke faith with aod fell under the condemnation of their own supporters to such an exteut as the Lau-. rierites have done during their first year ! The customs port of Nelson shows the exports of ore from West Kootenay during the last fiscal year to have been valned at $4,841,459, over $3,200,090 having heen shipped in the last six months. Abort half of the total was from the Roseland mines, the balance being from the adjoin- ing mines of Nelson, Ainsworth, and Slocan. This record, highly satisfactory as it is in memory of what the region was twenty four or even tweive months ago, promises to be eclipsed during the current fiscal year, and though, from the circum- stances of development much of tbe pro- fit goes to another country, much will re- main, and when smelting and reducing works are established in Canada the pro- portion will increase. There has been some money foolishly lost in the British Columbia mining country, but there wil] be many times the amount legitimately mide. The cold facts of the trade returns show this. NEWS NOTES, Lord Salisbury $ recent jest in the House of Lords at the arbitration principle, apro- pos of Delagoa Bay, was rather justifiable. It was in June, 1889, that the Portuguese government seized the Delagoa Bay rail- way, which was being conctructed under contract by @ British-American firm. The British government of course came to the detence of the rights of the British firm, and the matter was referred to the arbitra- tion of three prominent citizens of tbe Swiss republic. Eight years have passed, and yet no decisiou has been given by the arbitration. Itis contideutly expected that Portugal will be condemned to pay excee. = ingly heavy damages in ihe end. This increase ruas from 5 to 33 per cent, and is calculated to aver- age 20 per cent. for the whole province. There could be no better evidence sought of the confidence of the people who know the country in ig capacity. They have seen it in good years and bad and are pre- pared to invest theirskili and jabor in it more and more year by year. For practical work in bebalf of Treland the Conservative Government has wore than vnce shown its capacity. When Mr. Arthur Balfour was chief secretary he won the hearty thanks of the ftamine-stricken people even while he was being reviled by their representatives in the House of Com- mons. Now, Mr. Gerald Baifour, the pre- sent chief secretary, has disarmed his crit- ics by his scheme ot works, one effect of which will be to make some of the wild- est and most picluresqve, as well as some of the poorest, sections of the island of easy access.
