Cartridge Cases, like most things , in this world, are the product of man's inventive mind. In this part- icular case, the march of man's mind was singularly slow. The old muzzle-loading rifle was a clumsy and stupid weapon. 1t was slow to load and fire. It seem- ed like the simplest thing to uro-1 , creases duce a breech-loading gun and one _ was developed in England in 1670. There were traces of the same idea earlier. Stihl. the armies 0f the world did not rush to the accept- ance of the new device, Fighting men have conservative minds. The difficulty lay in the fact that with the breech-loading wea- pon. the gases were inclined to come back in the face of the man lwho fired it. This was unpleasant and, at times. dangerous. Besides. it lessened the efficiency of the gun. Many different devices were tried but the problem was solved eventually by a close-fitting Jlélill- lic cartridge which closed the breech and gave the world tile modern weapon of today. The breech-ieader-it was called the Needle Gun—vvas first used m the Danish-Prussian and Austro- Pzussian ivars of 186i and 1366. It was known as the Needle Gun l».- cause the hammer of the gun drove a sharp-pointed needle into the cap of the cartridge. It worked cffl- cierltiy. It was tile malli cause of the overwhelming success of tile Prussialis in the conflict. of 1866. 1n the same year, England converted her old muzzle-loading Enfield into the breech-loading Snider, and three years later, adopted the Mar- tlni-l-Icnry rifle-an implovemcnt upon the iorlilcr vivenpoil. The world was now ready for battle with a more deadly weapon than ever before. Breech-loading artillery develop- ed about the same time. but the world dropped into a peaceful pov- iocl. Tltere were minor wars. im- poitnrit in their Cli-ly—lOl' example. the Spanish-American War and the‘ cation and Recreation at Atlantic J Y. N. . Controversy in scientific circles as to whether increases resulting from drinking plain gelatine are due to properties in gelatlne itself or from prolonged exercise might be ex- plained by the fact that everyone is not measuring the same type and degree of fatigue. reported Dr. Kaczmareklflie new work uses more elaborate controls in order to iso- late the possibility oi’ endurance - 6.290"- OF WAR CANADA TURNS OUT CARTRIDGE CASES BY THOUSANDS 5010f‘! South African War but measured by totalitarian standards of con- flict, posing skirmishes at their best. Today. artillery ls breech- ioading, and Canada is turning out Cartridge cases for the artillery in millions. The 25-pounder cartridge eases are produced from disks of brass in diameter - .523" thick. The curious thing about these cases s1 that they are loaded separately in the gun; they are not fixed an:- munition " This permits variation in the . ze of the change. The brass is rolled in the mill to the required thickness. It is n11- nealeci to toughen it and then blanked out on presses. From that time on the process is one of drazv- ing the disks to a shape through varied operations followed 1n each case by annealing and pickling. The ' f. object of this process is always the same, to toughen the metal and make it more ductile. At the end of the draw the car- tridges are 3 3-4 inches diamewr, RDPTO-‘(illlftlel)’ 4 7-16 inches out- side rlimneter and about three inches long. After the second draw, the base of the cartridge is flatten- ed in a heavy press, flattened and indented. It then goes through two mole drawing operations. Pe- foro going through each draw, the cartridge is clipped in oil, for car- tridges have cylindrical wills of thin metal. the metal must be strong and tough. not brittle, and much of the work of lllIil-illlg cart- ridges consists of those 0perations_ washing. and repeating the process 51111811111112, dipping 1n acid bathe so as to insure uniform quality and also to avoid the possibility of breaking in the OPBYGLiDIlS. The cartridges. after the fourth draw. are trimmed for length, An- nother trimming follows after the sixth drawing operation. The next. proce<s i5 the shaping of the trend, vvlticli is done in a very heavy pressnlt now has a vezy distinct. cartridge like appearance. Results showed some gains in en- durance in the initial training per- 10d but silbstantiaily greater in- resillted in the gelatine periods. Double checks on this were done through intermediate non- gelntine and sham feeding periods. One of the methods of determin- ing fatigue other than the fact that the subjects were unable to llednl their bicycle ergometers any further, was systematic recording ‘of the heart and pulse rate prior, during and subsequent to the fidlnq ‘ by means or electrocardiagraph.
