Time.-Friday evening, March 81, 80 A.D. 'Plaee.-House of _Simon the leper, Bethany. - EXPLANATIONB : I. Mary of Bethany Unjustly Criti- ,cised by Jesus’ Disciples, 1-6. We are now within six days of Jesus' last passovsr. ft might appear from the account in Matthew that this supper was two days before the passover, but Matthew and Mark bring this least in after mentioning the oon- Blff-NCY 0| the chief priests and eld- ers, because the incident of the feast led Judas to his final determination to sell the Master to his enemies and is thus connected with the plot oi the Jewish leaders. This lesson throws 11 holy light upon home me and the way in which Christ regards it. Jesus does not forget in. these sup- reme hours of his life the friends he loved, Martha and Mary and Laz- arus. He will have for his own continuation of their faith, a few more times of communion with them. To bring them some further spiritual gift he came to Bethany. There is something inexpressibiy touching in those evenings at Bethany during the Inst week oi the Baviour’s life on .earth. He came for another purpose mlso. to nurture that name of faith Ithnt had been kindled in the hearts of many by the resurrection oi Laz- arus. We read in the beginning of Jesus' ministry, how, having per- formed his first. miracle at Cana and ,faith being awakened he afterward nourish and strengthen that mm; (ch. 4:54). So here Jesus comes Dose. Jesus did not awaken faith and then leave it to languish and die. But the principal purpose of this visit was communion with Martha and Mary and Lazarus. Jesus Christ while he was “very God of very God,” was also a very real man. Hn HELPFUL. _ ADVISE women, es- the power oi LYDIA E. PINKHAIWS VEGETABLE GOMPUUND to conquer all female diseases. Fntit-a-tives Limited, Ottawa. \ was our brother. The way in whichi Bethany is spoken of by Jolm is worthy ot note. "Where Lazarus was, whom Jesus raised from the dead." Bethany wris a little village hut it had a title of dignity; therei was a resurrected man there. There. was no one else nt the gathering who brought such joy to the aching heart nf Jesus as did Mary. She above all others had listened to him, under- stood 'bim. -'believed and loved, _Out of the wealth of her love she had purchased at a cost of nity-one dol- lars (a large sum in those days, her whole treasure) an alabaster crusc of ointment and put it aside to use it upon him when the proper moment came. She had understood what none of the rest had, that he was actual- ly to die and be buried. She had not sat at his feet in vain (Luke 10:39). ,l Mary had not stopped to calculate the cost of the ointment and whether her money for future needs. Love never calculates, it gives all. Mary's uncslculsting love of Jesus proved n safer guide to conduct than the cal- culating prudence of Judas and the rest of the disciples (cf. Mutt. 26:8). Mary's act was looked upon with suspicion and some very wise critici- sms were made upon it. Judas Iscariot was the leader in the harsh criticism. The Iscariots usually are the leaders in criticising the acts of others. But the whole apostolic com- pany were carried away by the bad spirit of Judas. Consorious criticism is more contagious than smallpox. Envy lay at the bottom of the criti- cism. They could not understand Mary's uct, not because it was below them, buthecause it was above them Marywas to have sufliclent compensa- tion tor the criticism of the discip- les in the approval of the Master. The' disciples regarded this use of the exceeding precious ointment as n “waste." That speaks poorly for their love tor Jesus and their esti- mation of him. But there are always those who think money spent on Jesus wasted. 'IL Mary of Bethany Commended by Jesus Himself, 7-11. Jesus prais- ed when his disciples criticised. He told the criticsthat they had the poor alays with them and whensn- ever they willed they could do them good ,(Mark 14:7). There wasa prick in this for their consciences. I-le told them_ further that what was to be dons for him must he done at once. Bo it must be to-day. "Upon Mary's act he bestowed the highest* possible praise, "She hath done what she could” (Mark _ 14:8). This is all Christ asks of any one (2 Cor. 8:12). _Mary was not looking for fame when she performed this actubut she got fame immortal. Jesus bestowed such commendation upon her as he be- stowed upon no other. and his won- derful prediction concerning her (Matt 26:13) has been literally fulhlled. Mary just poured out her heart's adoration, she worshipped. Martha was in part taken up with her service. to certify that I have used MIN- ARD'S LINIMENT myself as well as prescribed it in my practice where a liniment was 'required and have never failed to get the desired eiect. 0.
