Potatoes A Hot Issue In Aroostook County IRISQITI Ill.-E. lle.. - Unrest was the potato simstion boiled closer to the surface in Maine re- cently when two groups of grow- ers took action relating to govern- ment price controls and marke agreements. v More than 100 Aroostook county growers signed a petition express- ing their "unslterable opposition" to further government restriction, and yesterday. Frank W. 1-Iussey. president of Maine Potato Grow- Re. rnc., announced the withdraw ll of that organization from the mo Dealer Certification program in the Production and Marketing Administration. A copy of the petition was wired to Senator Allen J. Eilender, chair- man of the senate sub-committee on agriculture and forestry. in Washington, D. C. The telegram to senator zlisnder follows: "We, all potato growers of Aroo- stook county, who have signed our names to this telegram, hereby state that we are all unalterably opposed to any further legislation by the Congress which would im- pose further restrictions. quotas. or controls, either on acres or bush- els on the producer. "Rather than accept further reg- imentation. we would prefer that all legislation relating to price sup- port on potatoes be entirely abol- ished. Also, we emphatically state that no member of the Potato In- dustry Council of Maine. or the irrational Potato Council, so-called. has at present any authority from us to represent us in any way whatsoever." MIG Wlthdrlwl Hr. I-liussey said notice of with- drawal of the Maine Potato Grow- ers. Inc. from the dealer certif- ication program was given in a letter from the co-operativa's ex- ecutive committee to the state PMA committee April 3.. Mr. I-lussey said the executive committee had given the matter careful thought and had come to the decision they could not per- form the necessary merchandising services for all growers in the state under the present dealer certification program. For many weeks virtually all commercial shipments from Maine have been moving below support prices. This situation. Mr. 1-Iussey said, has made it impossible for MPG to serve hundreds of growers who were not eligible as certified shippers. All growers and shippers using he services of the co-operative PEP UP YOUR LIVER "Feel Young Again You won't feel well if your liver is out of order. see i! there is not a. sidssche, restlessness and the "blues." Pa. - A poll taken by the Pennsylvania oo-op- erstivs Potato or-even. inn-. in- dicstu Id per cent of all potato growers in Pennsylvania are ep- peud to continuing federal price slmports on their product. Oharil w. York. secretary of the grower! organisation. reported. The potato growers' crgsnlmtlon aligned itself against the govern- ment pregram when its board of directors adopted 'a resolution rab- ruary 14. opposing price support and the companion marketing ag- reement for Pennsylvania. Copies of this resolution were sent to all senators and congressmen. A poll taken at a. meeting in Lancaster March ll, the last at it series of eight meetings in the major producing areas, showed Mr. York said. that 92 per cent of all the growers are in favour of discontinuing price supports and that they are opposed to the pro- posed markctlng agreement and order. At the present time only 4 or 5 per cent of Pennsylvania's 10.000 potato growers are under the support program. The next move will be a state- -wide hearing. The date and place have not yet been announced. This will be followed by a secret ballot of potato producers in the state on the question of whether or not I marketing agreement is wanted by Pennsylvania growers. W. G. T. ll. NOTES Continued from page 8 I. new general has drinking become in Canada? Dr. ll. 0. Bell, Medical Director of the Shadow Health Founda- tion. Toronto, says in I-EALTH, official magazine of the Health League of Canada, that approxi- mately 66 per cent of the adult population of Canada use alcohol In some form. or this sixty-five per cent it is believed that 5 per cent or one in 20, develop an ill- ness thst can progress to prema- ture death or insanity if not treated in time. I. Would you call alcoholism an illness as tuberculosis is an illness? Dr. Bell compares tuberculosis and alcoholism thus: "One is caused by a tiny living organism. 3 term-the other by a. chemical or a drug. The unfortunate tu- bercular patient does not know in advance that he is going to contract the disease. Likewise those obtaining an abnormal re- action to alcohol do not know in advance that they are liable to become ill. "Tuserculosis, in the main, im- pairs only the physical aspect of health. on the other hand, al. coholism causes impaired physi- cal heaith, born immediate and progressive--a marked impair- ment ln mental health both im- mediate and piogressive- and a significant impairment of social health." I. What is the cure for alcohol- ism? "As far as medical science can determine. there is no satisfact- ory soiution for the alcoholic but total abstinence for the rest of his life." since the cure for alcoholism is total abstinence, it sems a pity that the drinker liable to be- come an alcoholic does not take the cure before he starts. and thus never start. .Aicoholism is, after all, a self-inflicted illness, but youth shou'd be scientifically taught the danger of the social glass. Oannot science determine who is immune against alcoholism? "No one is immune and those with superior intelligence. energy and general abilities seem more susceptible than the average per- son. Yet there are few physical or mental ailments causing great- er pain or torture than that as- sociated with alcoholism." I. Are there any heartening as- pects of Canada's present ..preI- IQ of sleeleliunf Yes, there are. (a) There is a new awareness of the problem on the part of the church people; (b) A new awareness of econo- mic loss to industry; (c) A new end insistent de- mand for Alcohol lducatlon in the schools from clubs and er- ganisations hitherto indiferent to the problem; (d) A new awareness of all drinking as a traffic hazard to the general public. Hitherto al- cohol education was demanded only by temperance people, but new this demand comes from other sources. We welcome their support of our on repeated de- mands for reform.
