PHYSICIANS WHO HAVE DIABETES The old statement that doctors will not take their own medicine is refuted by the diabetes survey during the 1960 Diabetes Detection Week. A survey was made on 362 male physicians and 22 female physicians of Cincinnati. As there was such a small number of female physicians they were excluded in the analysis. This number. 362. constituted about 3'1 per cent of the total number of physicians of Cincinnati. Among the men there were 4 with diabetes mellltus of many years duration. 'A diagnosis of mild diabetes mellitus was made in only two of the remaining 358. The brief history obtained fmm each physic- ian revealed that diabetes mellltua had been diagnosed in the parents. brothers and sisters. grandparents. uncles and aunts of I09 (30.4 per cent) of the 358 physicians. Further analysis revealed that 163 of- the 358 physicians were Jewish (42.9 per cent) and 195 were non-Jew- ish with a positive family history in 39 (20 per cent). What do we learn from the above figures? "Greater awareness of family ill- ness may have been responsible for the magnitude of the positive fam- ily histories of diabetes reported by the physicians who presented themselves for this survey." some years ago a survey of a large group of men of all occupa- tions and professions showed that while diabetes ran in the families of many physicians. the physicians themselves showed the lowest death rate among all occupations and professions. It is because not only physicians. but the public generally. are aware that by the use of insulin starch foods can be used by the body pro- cesses, and no deaths occur when the patient is under the care of his physician. ' Another factor that saves many lives in the medical profession is that with a family history of dia- betes in which in many cases over- weight is also present, the chances of diabetes occurring is greatly in- creased so the physician not only watches his diet. but uses insulin when sugar in urine and blood is above normal limits. I have quoted Dr. E. P. Joslin, the noted diabetes specialist, as warning those with a family history of diabetesithat they are practically inviting dia- betes if they allow themselves to become overweight but. on the other hand. can actually prevent diabetes by keeping their weight within normal limits. Physicians may not like taking medicine or other substances but they have the best record insofar as preventing diabetes in them- selves is concerned.
