THH DA i lt Tue Dairy EXAMINER SSS OCTOBER 28, 1882 Editorial Echoes. —Coincident with the opening of Parliament, England has had a grea gale which the dispatches say has ** dou: vast damage throughout the conntry. li is reported that commu lest fons will the Contivent were stopped; that man) distiicts were flooded ; that the ship; ing along the coast suffered severely ; that steamer was sunk by collision, and nin persons drowned. —The United States have not Savings Banks in connection with Post offices. Neither has Prince Edwara Island—though they are flourishing 1v- stinmtions in other parts of Canada. When shall we see this want supplied ? yei — Postmaster General Howe has pro- pored, aud the New York Hera/d advo- cates, the assumption by the Governtiven of the electric telegraphs. Our conten eopirary seys that the strongest argumen > > which are heard against these demand> are that Congress is so susceptible of corruption that if it should legislate to tuke possession of the existing telegraph lines it would be bribed to appropria's an extravagant price for them; avd that such av enlargement of the number executive employes as must ensue would be attended with a prodigious and de- plorable increase of abuses iv the federal service. The Chicago Zribune says :— a ‘Tt is believed that Jay Gould looks fondly and confidently to the sale of the Western Union Telegraph Companys plants, franchises, patents, and appurteb- avers to the Government as the vlumat realization of the huge stock jobbing schemes in which he has been engaced The Capital st ck of the corp ration is now $80,000,000, and Mr. Gould is said to en ti riain the hope that the Government may Le induced to pay $100,000,000 for the in- vestent which the capital stock nominally represents.” In England, telegraphy by Govern- ment is found to work well; and, if introduced into Canada, the system would be of advantage—most of all to this Province. —One of Arabi’s prisoners, who fell into the hands of the English, gives a graphic account of the filthy condition of the prison at Cairo. He says thumb- screws were pit ov him during the jour- ney from Cairo to Alexandria; at the latter place he was thrust into a prison filthier than the one at Cairo, and was swarmivg with vermin; he was robbed by the jailrs, and then put on board a vessel for Smyroa, but was smuggled ashore at Peravs by the aid of an Arme- pian officer of the ship. He thinks there are 9,000 innocent men in prisons such as he describes. If the man’s story be true, the conduct of Arabi and his subordinates, is another instance of ** mau’s iuhumanity to man.” —Dr. Carpenter says we do all we can to thwart oature by «pplying ligatures to the wrong parts of the body. ‘The good sense of the English nation,” says Dr. Carpenter, ‘is abolishing at least Stays from the list of articles which young girls wear, but they are sadly too much used even now.” —On Tuesday last, a very influeutial deputation, comprising leading repre- sentatives of the English, Methodist, and Presbyterian Churches of Canada, in Ontaiio, waited on Mr. Mowat, Pre- mier of Outario, and requested him to make the teaching of religion obligatory upon the public schools of that Provioce. Mr. Mowat returned a diplomatic answer. He said the Goverrment would take the matter iuto earnest considera- tion, —The eviis which seem just now to agitate most the body politic of the United States are **Bosses” and ** Political Assessments.” ~~ ew + alana The Chinese Question. Tue importation of several thousand Chinames to work as navvies in the con- | struction of the Cavada Pacific Railway is creating a stir among the workingmen. At a meetiog of a Trades Union held in Toronte a few nights ago resolutions strougly condemnatory of “John China- mau” being allowed the countenance of governmeut or its coutractors, und urgiog a probibiliou or restriciion, when- ever practicable, of Chinese immigration, were passed. <a - Civil Service Examinations. Beautiful weather, lar.e audiences, impressive ser vices, end hendsome contributions, greet: his wew effort. The day was remarkabk ‘s one of the finest of the season, aud the wilding was much spoken of as one of th eatest of the Island village churches vhich it is—which enabled not a few, from . distance, to enjoy a pleasant drive, an ee aud hear for themselves. At each © the three services (half past ten o'clock, norning ; three o'clock, afterncon; ane seven o'clock, evening) the building wee most uncomfortably thronged and large unmbers could not gain admission, Peop!: had come from various parts of the Islan’, aud the various denominations had more oi ess of their members present, Catholics, Byptists, Methodists, Presbyterians, an Episcopalians mingled together to see and war what was to be seen and heard I was certainly a day of thankfulness and re- jeing for the Methodists. At the morning service, precisely at half past ten, the Rev. Mr. Cowperthwai « sounded the first words of public worship, by commencing the dedicating service se weseribed by the Methodist Church of Canada, The Rev. E. Coary (Baptist) dlered a prayer, and the Rev. Prof. Bur- wash occupied the pulpit. The Hymn: used for the occasion were the Gd57th GG2ds and 6G71st. Mrs. Jabez Lea pres'd d at the organ. The musical part of the cervices was of a high order, and the anthem O Bo Joyful” at the afternoon service, was rendered in a manner seldom equalled xcept in Catholic or Episcopal cathedrals. Professor Burwash chose for his text, Deuteronomy, 29th chap., and 29th verse: ‘ The secret things belong unto the Lord our Ged; but those things which are re- vealed belong unto us, and to our children tor ever, thar we may do all the words of his law.” The sermon displayed much lepth of theught. The speaker dwel largely upon the urysteries of religion and nature, and the bounds set to human en- quiry, and then opened up to his hearers the revealed truths of Chmstianity, as re- yards ‘heir personal salvation. The Pro- tessor is a speaker who rivets the attention -f his hearers. The sermon was an earnest and eloguent one. He possesses remark- able powers of el cution, especially dis- played in his rendering of poetic compvsi- tions, an elecution, however, which is somewhat marred by uneasy, ungraceful and nervous gesticulation; but, at the sam» time, could not mar the truths he ex- pounded. One could imagine the pleasure et listening to bim, from a wrtten sermon; for as a reader he excels. At the close of sermon, the remainder of tae *‘ dedicatory service was accomplished, taken part im by the Revs. Messrs, Teed, Cowperthwaite snd Buorwash, together with the ladurs of Church. Mr. Tred is the appointed minis- ter of the Discrict. At three o’clock the Rev. Mr. Cowperth- waite presided at the services, and preached from the 24th chap. of St. Luke, 13th, 14th and 15th verses: ‘‘And, behold. two of them went that same day to a vil- lege called Emmana, which was from Jerw- stlem about three score furlongs. And they talked together of «ll these things which had happened. And it came to paxs that, while they commuped together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them.” The sermon was a heart- burning, earnestly impressive, soul-stirring one, breathing throughout a sacred influ- ences, gathered into living realitiea—rhe realities of faith—which made men feel as much in the company of the Master, as did Cleopas and Simon. It was ali Christ The evening service—the largest congre- gation of all—was presided over by the Rev, Mr. Burwash. He wished to ‘‘ have # plain and easy talk” with his hearers, and founded his discourse upon the 23rd Psalm. Many who heard the ‘* seczets” of the morning, were visibly impressed by the glorious ‘* revelations” of the evening. He fairly revelled in the sublime comfort and unutterable sublimity of the truths laid down in the Psalm, and old and young listened with great attention,as he breathed ferth from his heart word after word foll of life, pointing upwards to the Christian’s home, where they dwell in the house of the Lora for ever.” Many wiil never forget the day. It will be remewbered for ever. Eterna) truths leased it, and nature smiled upenit. The rich gave bountifully, the poor gave more —all they could. All day long the glorious sun shone out, and the ‘* hallowed shadvus of even” were tinted by the silvery rays of moon, and stars, and other worlds. Miny, as they wended their way home- | wards, talked of Christ. One old man said he '‘ had him right in here—in hia heart.” Ail were charitable The day had been to the Methodists, and now each would still love his ‘* own vine and fig-tree,” none the less, perhaps all the mere. Financially, the proceedings were a suc- cess. I have not learned the exact amount collected for the building fund, but heard it was over two hundred dollars The Church cost about six thousand doeliars. and about one thousand remains to be made up. It is built to seat 350 of an audience. — Com. the - — oe Frercy Woot, Berlin Wool and Scotehe Yarn (slightly damaged), selling at half price, at Perkins & Sterns. oct27 3i Miss GALLANT has removed to Kent street, opposite the Kocklin House, where she will coutinue te carry on the millinery business as heretofore. oct!8 tf Qci- of, Pears, green and purple Graper, Gravensteim Apples, &c,, at Beer & Goff’s. oct 20 Dorsey Gorr & Co’s Boots are the rage.
