Winslow had been a strong Sa!- vation Army man, but failing to see the point of the argument advanced by his spiritual teachers that be should give up the use of tobacco, rebelled when told to abandon it. The Army captain, happen- ing to see him enjoying a gool old-fashion- ed smoke, ——T told him to hand over his pipe, and on Mr. Winslow object- ing in language to suit the occasion, tried to take it from him. An exciting scene followed. Victory hovered first over Wins- low, then over the captain, and fiaally alighted on the shoulder of the former, when he, picking up a hammer, struck the gallant captain # stunning blow, which ended the affsir forthe time. The event furnished groundwork for numerous elo- quent addresses, of a highly improving nature, in the barracks. — At Cornwall, this morning, January 29, 1892, David Welsh, aged 383 years.
