SPORTS FRONT ... Brings. Back Old Memories - By PIUS CALLAGHAN Tiik FACT that Old Home Week is drawing near brings back memories of some greai racing down through the years. It was the late Col. Dan MacKinnon who originated the Old Home Week idea and it suvely wasn’t long catching on. The colonel was indeed a man of vision and he went about his work with a fierce zeal. He sold the Old Home Week idea to thousands of Islanders abroad and now it has come to be a ‘must’ for these good folks to return to Charloitetown for this fun feast in August. . WHEN the Old Home Week idea was started the race pro- gram consisted of four meets. They raced Tuesday, Wednes- day, Thursday and Friday afternoons. The evenings were de- voted entirely to the vaudeville acts which took place before * the grandstand, There was no Coliseurn in those days to house the vaudeville artists and there were no‘ lights to permit night racing Now, the vaudeville takes place every afternoon and evening in the big building. Following this entertainment, harness racing is provided for the large crowds which jam their way into the raceway. Instead of four race programs, it has now grown to twelve (we say this of course if rain doesn’t upset plans) and.all of the twelve attract big crowds. The vaudeville performances find huge throngs at the Colis- eum and many of these persons leave the Coliseum and wend their way to the races, , * The Crowd Helps IT’S A week of great excitement. workers at the grounds but they seem to love the hustle and bustle of it all. Pari mutuel ticket sellers and cashiers will tell you that it’s far more fun to work Old Home Week than at any other time of year. There seems to be a real holiday spirit in the air and it makes working that much easier. You need a crowd to make things interesting and Old Home Week surely supplies the crowd. The midway, the music from the orchestra which supplies the accompaniment for the vaudeville artists, the roar from the barkers trying to attract folks into the various sideshows, the operators of, the various games of chances trying to entice customers to their booths, all are a very necessary part of the Old Home Week You Can Expect Upsets ‘SECOND SECTION" "> llisreinecii ¥ Che Guardian - “Covers Prince Edward Island Like The Dew" | an renee a .
