Il. The moon through the fleecy clouds now rode, And the everlasting stars above, Seemed the heavenly vault to o'erload With their bright orbs bespeaking love ; And, nodding in the wind that blew, Beneath my feet the vernal flowers, Their shaded petals moist with dew, Breathed iacense to the darkling hours. it I, here among the cells around, In silence sat and counted @ er The forms within the holy ground, W hose sleep will last for evermore. Among them in its cold embrace Are those with whom, in life's fair morn, I frolicked round the very place c fro! y si pw shields their form. | gy , That from my sight now shiek t | Ey ery IV. Here sleep without dissenting words [he rich man by the poor man’s side, The beggars by the pompous lords, For death puts all but death aside ; And as bright gems beneath the wave, As flowers unwatered by our tears, She lays them in a common grave With naught to mark their death or years. | py ordering goods to be forwarded by the New Y. But, like the buzzing moth that flies Towards the light where in the flame The wretch in awful agony dies, We mortals earthly gods still claim, Though as the prickly thorns entwined With e’en the softest seeming rose Mankind in life great wealth may find, Means anything but calm repose. Vi. Around the winds that mournfully sighed ith ali the night’s lone voices said, Behold the pomp of buman pride That has the mortal body wed. Av I sat, my frame awake with cold, Here pondering o'er the ways of man, Till me the bell in the belfry told That night had ied aad day began. Tomas BYRNE. St. Dunstan's, Nov. 16th. SS Russian Women. It has often been said that the Russian government has a peculiar and especial dread of the educated young women who have espoused the cause of Nihilism, and of their influence over the young, whose studies they share in the colleges and uni- versities. For a woman convicted of par- ticipation in Nihilists’ plots there is no mercy. She is doomed from the outset. Five prisoners were tried in St. Peters- burg on Monday for complicity in a plot to killthe Czar. Two of these, vfficers of the army, were acquitted. The remaining three, two men and one woman, were found equally guilty, and condemned to be hanged. But the court, in the case of the two men, recommended that the Czar re- mit the sentence of death and that banish- ment to Siberia be substituted, but in th~ case of the woman no such recommendation was made, and she will no doubt be hang- ed. There seems to be an infatuation among a certain class—and it is an educat- ed and an excellent class—of Russian women to devote their lives to the cause of the revulutionists, and whenever one of their number is convicted and hanged she is looked upon as a martyr to her country, and new recruits spring up and take her place. As a means of suppressing Nihilism, especially among the women, hanging is a fa:lure. ea © OO Local Notices. 5,000 pounds of rolled oats received to- | diy at Beer & Gofi’s. nov24 3i Cloakings.—A large assortment at Stan- ley Bros , Brown's Block.
