The wife of the lieutenant-gov- Errant Engine : Js Sabotaged NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — The Jersey ~Central Railroad said Monday its errant locomotive that left the Jersey City yards on an unmanned 22-mile run two weeks ago was sabotaged. The locomotive did not run away by itself, said J. C. McLes- ter, the railroad’s vice-president. He testified at a state public util- ity commission hearing called to decide what safety regulations might be needed to prevent such Incidents in the future. McLester said an investigation _ showed that the locomotive had been stopped properly when it was left idling Nov. 12 in the yards. That meant, he said. that the throttle was off, the independent was on, the field switch that sends electricity to the trac- _ tion motor was off, and the re- verse lever was in neutral. When the locomotive was halted 22 miles away in South Amboy. he said, -its throttle was wide open, the brake was off and the field switch and reverse lever Was engaged. _ “The only conclusion is that this was a case of malicious mis- chief. Someone deliberately went » yards with sabotage mind,” said McLester. Division Charge Gets No Comment . ST. JOHN'S, Nfld. The Japanese expedition was forced by avalanches to give up an attempt to reach the summit of 23,440-foot Mount Gauri Sankar after members had climbed about 20.000 feet.
