P. Colwill. je26 d w 4w Curmp Beaten to Deatn.—A_ terrible ‘tory of cruelty comes from the parish of Bathurst, in Gloucester County. A 9-year old girl named Ida Young, adopted by a un named Jack Vienneau, a Frenchman, whose wife was very cruel to the child, irequently beating her very severely. On Friday last the child was returned to her oid home in a dying condition, being found by her uncle on the roadside. On the ex- amination be ing made, she was found to have been beaten in a terrible manner, her body being bruised from head tofoot. She atid Mrs. Vienneau had beaten her with a stick and then sent her home. She was put to bed, but died on Tuesday night, after msking a statement of the case to Father Barry, the parish priest. The Rustico Bank bill has been assentid to by the Governor-General. ————2. — ~ The State of Indiana Arrives. Tue State of Indiana, cently purchased by the Boston, Halifax and P. E. Island Steamship Company, for the route between this port and Boaston, arrived here this morning about seven o'clock and is now discharging at Pownal Wharf. A number of persons have visited and inspected the steamer since her arrival, and are much pleased with her, The State of Indianais 1612 tons net, and is 3-masted, schooner rigged. Since being purchased by her present owners she has undergone considerable interior altera- tiens, and kas now accommodation for 400 passengers, and space sufficient for about 100 more berths. The steamer is fitted throughout in good style. There is a ladies social room on deck, off which is a smoking room, _ fitted with card tables and settees. The dining saloon is reached by means of a staircase leading from the social hall and smoking room. This saloon is 35 feet in length and 34 feet wide, and has four rows of tables. The walls are fitted with plate glass mirrors, and there isa piano at one end. Left of the saloon are some fine staterooms, each of which is fitted with two berths and a setter. Forward of the saloon i way in which are located more staterooms firted up in a similar manner to those al- ready referred to. There are also two rows of berths inthe forward saloon, low this deck are the cabins for ladies and gentlemen, each of which will accommodate about 75 persons. All the rooms and cabins are lighted by electricity, the use of which is general throughout the ship. The officers’ quarters are on the upper deck. The officere are : Captain— Asa M Doane.
